KNITTING WITH COLOR

Have you ever wondered what intarsia means? How can you knit with one color per row but make it look like you are using two colors? When do you use a bobbin and what is it anyway? Come and learn techniques that are certain to create colorful knitting. And for those who have done some color knitting already but haven’t been happy with the results, this technique-oriented workshop will likely help you achieve more professional-looking results. Three methods for adding color to knitting will be covered: slipstitch knitting, intarsia, and stranded knitting.

Skill Level: Advanced Intermediate

STRIPES: HOW TO ADD COLOR TO YOUR KNITTING THE EASY WAY

Vertical or horizontal? Skinny or wide? Dramatic or coordinating? Play with colored paper and pencils to create stripe swatches and discuss what actually constitutes a stripe. See how foregrounds and backgrounds can change your stripes and discover how medieval Italian mathematics can create an internal sense of rhythm resulting in visually pleasing fabrics. Utilizing these strategies can go a long way toward making your scrap yarn projects look elegant! During the hands-on portion of the day, you will learn to carry colors not in use along the side of your knitting instead of cutting the yarn and reattaching it. This will help you avoid having lots of ends to weave in but, for the few you do have, you will practice weaving them in as you go, making finishing a breeze. Finally, you will learn how to avoid the dreaded “jog” when you are knitting stripes in the round. This final swatch can be made into a sweet baby hat (pattern provided in class).

Time: 10:00am - 5:00pm

JAPANESE DOMINO SCARF**

Domino knitting, Vivian Hoxbro’s take on modular knitting, is a fun, easy way to knit in blocks that you assemble as you go. For multicolor projects you knit with one color at a time, so while the result may look complicated it really is very easy to do. This class will focus on a beautiful scarf from Vivian’s Japanese book that offers plenty of opportunities for you to think about the importance of color selection and placement within a piece. Using colored pencils and paper will allow you to work on color selection and create swatches without yarn and needles! During the knitting portion of the workshop, you will come to understand the directional aspects of domino knitting as you navigate your way around squares and triangles. And if you ever thought scarves were boring and plain, this colorful, light-as-air project will surely change your mind! The pattern is provided. Note: This class fulfills the Program requirement for Traditional Folk Knitting.

CLARA PARKES

THE WONDER OF YARN **

“All knitterly creation stems from one simple element: yarn. It is the baker’s flour, the jeweler’s gold, the gardener’s soil. Yarn is creation, consolation and chaos all spun together into one perfect ball. It’s a simple concept, twisting fibers together into a continuous thread of yarn. But the variety of fibers, blends, and spins is truly infinite. So is our relationship with yarn. We love it, we covet it, we are knocked senseless by it, yet sometimes we are baffled, thwarted, and betrayed by it.” This workshop will lead you to a “much better understanding of yarn, how it’s made, who makes it, how it gets to you, and what it longs to become in your hands. The next time you pick up a skein and someone asks, ‘what are you going to do with it?’, you’ll be able to respond with confidence.”

Note: This class fulfills the Program requirement for Fiber Theory.

KNITTING I AND II

KNITTING I

This class was created for those who have never knit before. In this six-session introduction to knitting, first-time knitters will learn a variety of basic techniques: the long-tail cast-on, the knit and purl stitches, and binding off in knit and purl. Other topics covered include yarn weights and corresponding needle sizes, the importance of the ball band, and fixing mistakes. The most important topic covered, however, is gauge...what it is, and how to make a gauge swatch. The Knitting I Handbook, which is included in the tuition, will guide you through the course and serve as a reference during the class and after it as well. In addition, you will receive a skein of yarn and a set of needles to get you started.

KNITTING PROJECTS

BASIC TOE-UP SOCKS

Socks are hot, and everyone is making them, but every sock knitter seems to have her (his) favorite method. Since most socks are knitted from the cuff down, toe-up socks are a true knitting adventure that you should add to your sock knitting repertoire. Why knit from the toe up? Well, if you’re not sure you have enough yarn for a pair, and you start at the toe, you can use the yarn you have to knit the foot and the heel of each sock, then divide the yarn you have left in half and work on the leg and cuff of each sock until you run out of yarn. You can also try on your socks while knitting them to be sure that you are getting the right fit. Provisional cast-on, gusset shaping and turning the heel with short rows are skills that will be acquired. Experience with double pointed needles is a must! The pattern is provided.

CLAY BUTTONS AND EMBELLISHMENTS

It’s so hard to find the perfect buttons for your hand woven, crocheted or knitted garments. In this class, you’ll make custom buttons to match and complement your handmade creations. We’ll work with polymer clay, a colorful and versatile material which requires only simple tools and a toaster oven. You’ll be able to co-ordinate colors and textures, create amusing designs, or imitate an antique look. The possibilities are endless and easy to achieve. Making your own buttons, shawl pins and other embellishments is the perfect way to complete your handiwork. All materials and tools will be provided.
