wears well, color not fast

I knitted a cardigan in a pink shade two years ago and it has held up VERY well for merino -- no pilling to speak of. The color, not so good. The first wash took it from a rosy salmon to a bright peach, the second took it to a peachy angel-skin tone. Pretty, but very very pale.
A pair of socks I knitted with a different skein disintegrated at the heel in an afternoon's wear but I think that might have been an especially vicious pair of shoes. Strange.
