Aran Design Part II: Designing and Knitting an Adult Aran Sweater

Having mastered some of the basic techniques of Aran design in Part I (Design a Small Aran Sweater), we move on to more interesting challenges: sleeves, necklines, closures and more cables! We will continue to focus on Aran designs, using more advanced cables, complex twisted stitches and interesting stitch designs to create unique and personal Aran sweater designs that will express our own individual style and taste. We will explore more sleeve techniques as well as zipper closures and interesting neck finishes. Our finished product will be a one-of-a-kind Aran sweater that will fit you perfectly, and one you'll be proud to wear for years to come.
Prerequisite: Design a Small Aran Sweater
Instructor: Diane Fernald
Date: Tuesdays 1/29, 2/5, 2/26, 3/19, 4/16, 5/7
Time: 6 - 8pm
Materials Required:
- Required: Aran Sweater Design by Janet Szabo (discountable)
- Yarn: 1800 to 2800 yards of Aran or worsted weight wool, depending upon the size of the sweater you’ll be knitting. (Check out other aran sweater patterns for a guide on how much yarn to purchase for your size; Ravelry is a good source. Sales associates at Webs can also help you.) Add an extra skein for swatching purposes. A light-colored yarn shows off aran stitches best, but any color is acceptable. Be warned that dark colored yarn does not always show off the aran and cable stitches to its best advantage.
- Knitting needles to attain gauge
- At least one dozen stitch markers in various colors
- 2-3 row counters
- Pad of graph paper, pencil and a good eraser, notebook
- Your Knitter's Tool Kit
- Recommended: Knitwear Design Workshop: A Comprehensive Guide to Handknits by Shirley Paden
- Recommended: Stitch dictionaries with cable and twisted stitches.
Prior to the first class, please complete the following:
- Begin to review cable patterns, keeping in mind the concepts we reviewed in the Design a Small Aran Sweater class; scale of cables, complexity of overall pattern, compatibility of cables and stitch patterns based on row repeats, gauge, etc.
- Swatch! Swatch! Swatch! Make multiple swatches of cables alone and in groups to get an overall sense of how the patterns will look.
- If you are feeling adventurous, begin to sketch out a rough draft of the overall design and bring to our first class so we can discuss and review designs and possible choices.
