Comments about Nancy's Knit Knacks WPI Tool:
This seemed like a good idea, and I've wanted one for quite some time. However, in person I find it has an odd smell; I don't know if that's some sort of staining or sealant, but it's odd and a bit off-putting. This tool came with a hole drilled in one end and a separate metal key ring. There is also a hole punched in the laminated card that lists how to use and yarn standards information. I tried to put the key ring through both the tool and the card, but it absolutely will not fit through the hole in the tool. I find these kinds of small tools and gadgets very easy to misplace, and am often scrambling to find them, so being able to attach it to something else or something bigger would have been a benefit. Finally, I am perplexed that the information given on the card differs wildly from the standard yarn weight information posted on Ravelry. For instance, Ravelry says fingering weight is 14wpi, but the WPI tool card says finger is 19-22wpi and sport is 15-18, dk is 12-14. That means Ravelry's fingering weight is equivalent to a WPI tool finer dk weight. This does not resolve confusion. I did find it interesting that the instructions clearly advise against wrapping, but explicitly state the yarn should be rolled around the dowel portion. Apparently wrapping can add or remove twist and change the thickness of the yarn. Clearly an important distinction I'd never considered.
