    Madelinetosh Tosh Merino Light

Madelinetosh Tosh Merino Light is a 100% superwash merino wool, single-ply fingering weight yarn with a generous 420 yards per skein. One skein is more than enough yardage to complete a pair of socks and two skeins can complete a full-sized lace project. Each incredibly soft skein is hand-dyed in small dye lots.

Please note: Each skein of Tosh Merino Light is unique. There are no dye lots and skeins may vary. The yarn color you receive may look different than the color pictured.

I used the magenta colorway to make double sized hexagons for the Beekeeper's Quilt. The colorway is beautiful and has various shade of purple in it, which have just the right amount of contrast. Pooling has not been an issue at all, and the depth of color is amazing.
I was a bit worried about this yarn being single-ply, but I have had no problems with the yarn splitting or twisting up. I would recommend this yarn for scarves and shawls, but I would be a bit worried to use it for socks and would recommend a plied yarn, like Tosh Sock.
The yarn is soft and springy, and is not at all itchy. The machine washability makes is the icing on the cake!

I had an average of 3 - 4 spliced yarn knots per skein. On top of that I also had (in 2 skeins) very cleanly cut pieces of yarn that I had to tie back together (when winding the yarn - there was just unexpected clean cut end pieces). I wind my yarn by hand so it wasn't from quickly winding on a yarn swift that "broke" the yarn. These were not breaks - but clean cuts. This single ply yarn is very loose and fragile in many places. After I managed to complete my lace knit stole and gently washed before blocking - I saw that there were 6 places in the lace knit pattern where the yarn had broken again (not where the knots were). I also had to alter my pattern as I bought more yarn than I needed and yet fell way short of yarn needed to make my wrap the length specified in my pattern. My gauge was correct - I feel I was shorted on the yarn in the skeins some as I should have had at least 60 yds left over (the pattern called for 1200 yds and I purchased 3 skeins). This is the first time I have ever run out of yarn when knitting any project - I always have left over yarn. There were 17 pattern on each half but I was only able to complete 10 1/2 on the 2nd side. I hesitate to machine wash this as it is SO fragile (the lable says you can machine wash). I was torn between knitting my project in this yarn or my usual favorite Lorna's Laces - I chose this because it was a little less (cost wise). The colors are very pretty and work well with the pattern I used - I just don't see how it will be worn much due to the fragile nature of this yarn. I was hoping to have something special (a stole) as a knit keepsake from my son's wedding. I'll be lucky to have it last through the ceremony.

Comments about Madelinetosh Tosh Merino Light:

This yarn is lovely and knits up beautifully. The colors are amazing! I have never encountered one knot and the yarn is dyed consistently throughout the skein. Since a particular color can vary greatly from dye lot to dye lot be sure to buy sufficient quantities at one time.

Comments about Madelinetosh Tosh Merino Light:

I use Tosh Merino Light for scarves and small shawls & wraps. I use it for "one skein" projects specifically because I don't enjoy alternating skeins every other RS row. Tosh Merino Light is a very trustworthy yarn. It always performs beautifully. It is very compliant to blocking and shaping. I've never purchased a color that didn't turn out gorgeous. The subtleties in the colorway are unmatched. I love this yarn, and it deserves its reputation as WONDERFUL. I think the price is very good for the amount of yardage you get (420yds). I try to purchase quantities of yarn so that I'll qualify for WEBS generous discount, but I'd still purchase TML by one hank at a time if I needed it.

Comments about Madelinetosh Tosh Merino Light:

I made an Eden Prairie shawl from this in off-white and deep primary colors: Gilded, Tart, Ink and Paper. It was an enjoyable experience - I wanted to knit the entire thing sitting in sunlight because the colors virtually glow.

Once finished, I put it to soak for 10 minutes in a sink full of cool water with a drop or two of Eucalan. Bad move. When I came back, the dark red Tart had bled onto the white Paper in ugly uneven pinkish blotches which are permanent. Ugh.

The shawl is still beautiful because the pattern is beautiful, but the blotches are obvious. I won't be wearing it as often as I'd looked forward to doing and feel like the miles and miles of garter stitch I put into it were wasted.

However, I love the yarn and the pattern enough to make another one, but next time with all similar colors so if (when) they bleed it won't be as noticeable.

I ordered A LOT of skeins of different colors because they are lovely. The smell is off putting though. I cannot imagine knitting with that smell. I have ordered a lot of yarn online but have never had any that smelled at all, let alone bad. Did I get a bad run of yarn?

Tosh light is beautiful yarn. However, you need to be prepared for the color. The color on the web page may not be the same as what is delivered to your door. I got Magnolia Leaf. On the web page it looked like it was mostly a burnt orage color. When it arrived, it was mostly gold, green and a LITTLE bit of burnt orange. I used it anyway, and it turned out nice. It just wasn't what I thought it would be.

You can never go wrong with Madelinetosh yarns, and this is another one of my favorites. I'm knitting a large shawl for my mom. It's light weight yet very warm. All of my 6 skeins blend together nicely, no issue with dyelot differences. Knits up easily using a US5 sock rocket circ with great stitch definition in my cable patterns, no problem with splitting.
