I'm using this yarn instead of Amherst to knit Poncho Pullover featured in winter Vogue knitting. It's really beautiful. Recommended for garments. Lovely feel and is relaxing to work with.

It takes more dye than most yarns to get a nice dark color, but the shine and texture is worth it.

Comments about Valley Yarns Colrain - 250 Gram Hank:

I am down to my very last 250g skeins of Valley Yarns. This Colrain has been the plastic stash tote marked "The Good Stuff" for awhile. The 250s were discontinued a few years ago in favor of 100g skeins.

I am an indie dyer and love working with bigger skeins. In fact, I now order all my non-sock bases on cones when available from another source so I have more flexibility with my finished skein yardage. I would love to see cones or the return of the 250g put up so I could order more Valley Yarns as my bases.

As for this specific yarn, I love the sheen that the tencel lends to the soft wool. It is challenging / different to dye because it is a mix of plant and animal fiber, which generally each prefer different dyes & methods. The cellulosic tencel doesn't take up much of the acid dye I usually use on the wool. Unfortunately you have to be careful not to dye it with the alkaline fiber reactive dyebath that tencel prefers because it will eat up the wool component. I have dyed with vinyl sulphone at a mildly alkaloid pH, which was OK. I prefer however to just use straight up acid dye in a medium to light hue. Because the tencel won't take up much acid dye at an acidic pH, you get a lighter luminous shade which is really nice. My favorite is a light teal or violet/lavender or an icy winter palette. The texture is scrumptious and fluffy, with a light halo enhanced by the sheen of the tencel.
