This yarn is beautiful and glossy, no doubt about it. However, I don't think it is a heavy worsted. I was unable to make gauge with size 8 needles, and barely was able to make gauge with size 9 needles. The resulting weave was a little too loose to my liking, making it susceptible to splitting while knitting and snagging while wearing. I would like to see more heft and twist to this yarn to really make it a heavy worsted yarn.

    Comments about Valley Yarns Colrain:

I noticed one person said her hat shrunk in the rain - which is too bad, but I'm sure blocking it will fix that. Another said it wasn't a worsted weight, and indeed, it is not! However, it's a great l"light" worsted or DK weight. I am getting a solid 6 sts / inch on size 7 needles, and I'm a tight knitter (the band says 4.5-5, which just isn't so, or even close). So, be aware that it is a lighter weight than the worsted it's described as and plan accordingly. I am truly enjoying working with it, and it does frog well. I highly recommend it :-) Ordering more now...

    Comments about Valley Yarns Colrain:

Colrain is the recommended yarn for Valley Yarns' "Birch Leaf Hat". I love the pattern, and added two additional repeats to lenghten the hat. But after wearing it briefly on a New England misty morning, my Colrain hat shrunk a half-inch. Consider adding length to your Colrain knits, or plan on some assertive blocking.

I have had to unknit and reknit with this yarn quite a bit on the sweater that I am making with it. The yarn holds up very well. It's soft and strong and a pleasure to knit with.

        Comments about Valley Yarns Colrain:

I knitted a lace yoke "recipe of the month" sweater from Ravelry. The knitted item feels so soft and has a wonderful drape! The quality of this yarn is great and it feels like merino/silk without the price. It is the perfect weight and not hot or itchy. I like that it's not as thick as heavy worsted because it makes it more comfortable to wear.
I love the yarn so much that have enough yarn to knit another 3 sweaters in different colors.

        Comments about Valley Yarns Colrain:

Really gorgeous color saturation, with a bit of sheen. Silky, but strong. Very splitty on metal needles; fine on bamboo. The lighter-than-all-wool weight will likely work well in my mostly-temperate climate, for the cardigan I'm knitting. Seems to snag pretty easily.
