COLOR PLAY FOR HANDSPINNERS
Painted roving, multi-color batts, variegated top - a visit to a fiber shop or wool fair reveals a large and tempting array of hand-dyed fibers. We will explore a number of spinning methods to make the most of color and achieve stunning, original yarns. Spinning tips for creating multiple color effects from the same handpainted roving will include spinning from the fold, Navajo ply, spinning a 3-ply and a cabled yarn. The last portion of the class will cover the use of a drum carder for combining color. An electric Patrick Green Supercard will be used in demonstration and each participant will create a “signature” color batt.
Skill Level: Spinners should be able to spin a consistent single and to make a 2-ply yarn. It would be helpful if everyone is familiar with making tension and whorl-size adjustments as needed to their own wheels.
