Blackthorn Double Points

Blackthorn Double Pointed Needles have the feel of wood and the strength of steel. The pointed tips make fine work easier, and Blackthorns have enough grab to keep yarn on the needle but are slick enough to work fast. Virtually indestructible! Set of 5 needles included, each 6" long. Available in sizes US 0000 - US 4. Crafted in the USA.

Note: These needles may have a slight residue that could mar white or light-colored yarns. The manufacturer suggests thoroughly wiping down each needle before initial use.

These no-slide sock needles are magnificent. They grab the wool and hold it in place; their points make it easy to do even tricky twists and cables. They look and act like ebony, only better..since they are virtually unbreakable. Easily worth the price since unless you lose them, they will never need replacng.

I was looking for fine needles to make light weight mitts for use in an office environment. The first #1 broke, the next #0 bent. I purchased these with the hope that they would be resilient and strong. They were. I purchased #000 and #0000. They are expensive, but strong and resilient. However they have a slightly roughened testure to mimic wood and are unpleasant to work with because they feel dry, scratchy and tend to snag very fine fibers like silk.

        Comments about Blackthorn Double Points:

From the description, I was expecting something quite different from what I received. These are the grippiest needles I've ever worked with, to the point that it was uncomfortably difficult to slide my stitches along them. I expected them to have nice sharp points because they're described as pointy, but I actually found them rather dull. When they rub against each other, they make an awful sound that's reminiscent of fingernails on a chalkboard mixed with a metal fork scraping against a plate, which makes me cringe every time I hear it. I wish I hadn't bought three pairs of these, because I won't be using them.

With some sanding, polishing, and sharpening, they might become usable, but it really shouldn't be necessary.

On the plus side, they have a pleasant sheen...

        Comments about Blackthorn Double Points:

I wanted small size needles that wouldn't break in use, so the 00 is my experiment. These take some getting used to, strange surface texture and feel, and very grippy. They are growing on me, and I say give them a good long trial. Pretty sharp points.

Tough yet flexible, these carbon DPNs are quite pointy and easy to use, yet stand up to very tight knitting, even in a size 00.

              Service and delivery comments:

After an initially incomplete order, the missing item was sent to me very quickly.

No matter what type of knitting material, wool, silk, cotton, etc, the stitches do not slide off the needle but do come off smoothly while knitting. Absolutely love the feel, the warmth, the soft touch, the strength.

                Comments about Blackthorn Double Points:

I purchased these because I was tired of bamboo dpn's always breaking and not having sharp enough tips.

These have very sharp tips on one side and a little dull on the other. Works for me, but some people may not like that.

They also make a weird sound when they rub together. I wouldn't even hear it if the tv was on or a radio.

The needle surface is dull, so dull that it scratches when pulling the yarn for tension. The points are short and blunt.
i use steel and wooden needles for various reasons but i can not see a purpose for these.

They made a horrible noise when rubbed together in the paper package. The noise gets better when not in the package and after some additional sanding and polishing. They also aren't very sharp- but ran them through an old fashioned pencil sharpener to make a point. Not as comparable to knitter's pride without the metal tip as I thought.

I have used these to make a couple pairs of socks now. They are even lighter than bamboo, and have a pleasant, warm feeling in the hand. Unlike other carbon fiber needles, these do no have steel tips. This eliminates the bumpy join, but also means that the tips are not sharp and are very grabby. My gauge was much looser than normal, since the entire surface of the needle feels textured. It was harder to pull the stitches across. Overall I like the needles, but they aren't for every knitter or every project.
