Having difficulty finding some sport weight, machine washable yarn for sock making on my circular sock knitting machine, I gave this yarn a try. Wow, really nice, soft socks that knitted up with no problems whatsoever. I do not know how well they will wear or if they might pill, but after a couple washes, they seem just fine.

At the same time, I evaluated some Kroy Pattons yarn that was 75% wool, 25% nylon. The Kroy was a lighter, sport weight and the socks were not as soft, though they probably will wear better. I much prefer the Cascade 220 yarn.

I have knitted with Cascade 220 yarn in various weights for MANY years... both Superwash and "regular" wool, and have always been pleased with the results. That is no longer true!!! I am currently knitting a scarf/shawl with Cascade 220 Superwash Sport and I have never had a yarn shed and "fuzz" like this yarn is doing. My project looks like it's 20 years old and has been worn and washed too many times... and it isn't even off the needles yet. It looks so bad that I may never wear it, after untold hours of knitting. I see that the new Cascade dyelots now come from China instead of Peru, so maybe that is why this is the worst yarn I have knit with in 50+ years of knitting. I won't waste my time and money on this yarn again!

Pleasing yarn but quite splitty

By Vizsla Auntie

Pros

  • Dyed Evenly
  • Good Weight

Cons

  • Snags
  • Unravels

Best Uses

Comments about Cascade Yarns 220 Superwash Sport:

The color was exactly what I expected and very even. The yarn was a nice weight with a pleasing elasticky bounce. But it split and untwisted way too easily. Had to back up and try to correct stitches constantly. Looked a little worn before I even sewed the sweater together.

Comments about Cascade Yarns 220 Superwash Sport:

The only things negative about this yarn are (1) the plies separate easily, so you can split the yarn inadvertently, and it is occasionally blended with some stuff that isn't yarn (no doubt things that did not get carded out of the wool.) The finished product is not scratchy, and that is a BIG plus.

Bought this to knit a Debbie Bliss sweater for four year old. It looks beautiful, but really fell apart in the few places where I made a mistake and needed to undo and redo my knitting.

Great if you don't mind little mistakes or don't plan on making many. ;)

I purchased this yarn to make the 3 in 1 sweater by atelier alfa. The color selection is vast which for this project was a big plus. Also, a true sport weight yarn such as 220 Superwash Sport is perfect for "sweater weather" here in SC. I couldn't be happier with this purchase...especially since it was on sale! Win/win!!

The grand daughters love the softness, their parents love that it can go into the washer and I love the feel as I knit it. The colors are good [3 versions of pink!!}. My only unhappiness is the looseness of the twist as it splits quite easily.

I am knitting a sweater for my grand-daughter and found that the yarn unravels a bit during knitting. As long as I am careful, it works well, but can be annoying at times. That said, I just love the Cascade brand for wool products and used it for many other knitting projects. I just love the way it washes in the washing machine ... the result is tremendous softness.
