Plymouth Yarn Kudo

Perfect for slightly warmer garments, Kudo is a lovely cotton blend yarn that knits up into stripes with a great tweedy look.  You'll love working with it and watching the colors change.  Made in China.

I use this yarn for easy scarves and my standby, the La-La Simple Shawl. I live in the Southern US, but cotton yarn usually hurts my hands. This doesn't. I also like Cascade Tangier, but it sheds like a llama. This doesn't. Others complain about splitting and breaking, but I've never had that problem. Part of the reason is probably that I always use at least a #9 needle with it for an open look AND I don't go for remotely complex patterns on shawls or scarves. The twisting is not as much of a problem if I wind with a swift and ball winder and pull from the center. Even so, there are MANY yarns a lot twistier, so I don't mind this.

I received 2 skeins in a 'mystery' bag and purchased a third to complete the shrug I was making. All three skeins had the same problems. Thickness is listed as Worsted but ran from lace to roving and I frequently had issues with it pulling apart forcing me to rip out stitches to weave in new ends. It twisted up frequently no matter what I tried to prevent it. I also found pieces of hay throughout all three skeins, some as long as a 1/4". As most of the pieces had clearly been dyed it wasn't a case of picking it up from a display setting. This was the worst yarn I've ever worked with.

Comments about Plymouth Yarn Kudo:

I found a pattern that called for another similiar yarn with about half the yardage that KUDO has. Also, when I first found KUDO it was a "sale" yarn, a very good price for the quality. The project turned out so well, others in my kniting circle wanted Kudo to do the same pattern, but, naturally in different color combinations. We find the yarn works best with soft handling---do not knit TIGHT; it will break! We are using the pattern to make both summer tops (very simple styling since the textured multi-colored yarn does all the work) and winter vests---using basically the same simple pattern. Here is the secret---the pattern is knit multi-directional, usually a "patch" or "stripe" uses about 60 stitches, creating a band of a single color, then changes with the next direction into another colored band---all on the same side of the garment.

I cannot wait to try making a winter cardigan using entrelac. I plan to flesh out the simple rectangulars with rows/rnds of garter st for the necessary shaping---if needed. The yarn works so well in garter stitch pattern. Keep it simple, simple, simple.

  • Nice Texture

Cons

  • Breaks Very Easily

Best Uses

Comments about Plymouth Yarn Kudo:

The yarn is very pretty with changing textures and colors. However, it broke 3 times during the long tail cast-on (at a nice loose tension) and then 3-4 more times through the piece (a pretty bolero) and during the cast-off. I can't imagine making a sweater or other piece than requires sewing together-- it would not stand the strain. Thought about returning but it was so pretty.

Comments about Plymouth Yarn Kudo:

The self-striping yarn played a big role in the design. Several friends saw what I had done with the yarn and immediately wanted to order yarn to make their own all season vest--- front and back knitted the same. By knitting small sections and knitting the sections together, the colors pile up in unexpected combinations. It was intriguing.

        Comments about Plymouth Yarn Kudo:

As I was preparing to use this I realized that it broke easily, and on closer examination was able to break it with my fingertips a quarter inch apart. Usually it takes my arm strength to break a piece of yarn. I cannot imagine that this would wear well.

              I knit socks
              Love the colours
The yarn shreds and pulls apart as I'm knitting
Some of the strands are reduced to the circumference of a very fine thread and I fear my socks will let loose and break out in holes. The yarn is unstable. Though I just ordered 5 more balls of the yarn a few days ago, the 2 balls I've worked with since placing my order are problematic and I will not use or order anymore of this yarn.
