Norwegian Knitting Designs

A Collection from Norway's Foremost Knitting Designers
Colorful, lively and practical book which showcases the variety represented by some of Norway's best knitwear designers. The designers featured in this book have influenced Norwegian hand- and commercial-knitting during the last fifteen to twenty years.

Handknitting allows the designer an unbounded freedom to create a completely personal expression of their art through the use of colour, embellishments, structure and styling, using only knitting needles and skeins of yarn. In this beautiful book, previously published in the USA as 'Norsk Strikkedesign', some of Norway's foremost knitting designers present twenty-two unique knitted garments, all using classic Norwegian-spun wool yarns and based on traditional Norwegian patterns. Each design is accompanied by stunning photographs of the items themselves as well as the countryside that inspired them, and details of the materials used, pattern charts and detailed instructions. This book presents the very best of contemporary Norwegian knitwear design, drawing on its traditional roots and planting it firmly in the twenty-first century.

    Comments about Norwegian Knitting Designs:

I look at this book regularly for a special treat, and for inspiration and information when I am designing my own knitted garments. I have plans to knit 8 of the designs.
GREAT: The book is so beautifully photographed and the designer's short bios are so interesting that the pattern directions themselves, which assume an intermediate knowledge of the craft, become the main courses of a smorgasbord of Nordic knitting. The designs in the volume represent the most stunning collection of ethnic knitting patterns (other than those of knitted lace) that I have ever seen. Each garment stands out not only for the beautiful way traditional knitting stitches have been incorporated into a fresh contemporary form, but also for its almost mythic qualities, which appeal to a woman's poetic and romantic sides. Fussiness and cuteness would be foreign elements in the landscape of this collection, where the clothes seem to speak of a heroic past, a vibrant present, and a future of fantastic adventure. I have rarely seen knitted garments that, with a few exceptions, are well suited to grocery store and concert hall, to picnic table and lawn party. I treasure my hard copy, but value my 2nd edition soft cover copy as the version I can wear dog-eared if I like.
NOT SO GREAT: Some readers may notice that the pattern directions have been translated from Norwegian and do not in every case use the phrases American, Canadian or British knitters are accustomed to. However, for any knitter familiar with instructions by Elizabeth Zimmermann in Knitting Without Tears, her beginner's primer, for example; or with any other book for beginners learning stranded knitting, the instructions will become self-evidently clear.
