As summer winds down and the air becomes a little crisp, we start thinking about the bounty of Autumn. Sure, there’s apples and pumpkins, but my personal favorites are the sheep and wool festivals and the international celebration of fiber – Spinning and Weaving Week!
WEBS has celebrated this week for many years with an array of demonstrations, activities and workshops and 2014 brings more to do than ever. Each day we will feature free demonstrations of both weaving and spinning at our retail store at 75 Service Center Rd, Northampton. These demos will run from 11am–1 pm and cover some of the huge variations in these crafts. You can see everything from spinning on a drop spindle and spinning on a wheel, weaving on a rigid heddle loom, card weaving, floor looms, inkle looms and more.
Two special demonstrations during the week will highlight the huge range of possible styles of weaving. On Tuesday from 12–1 pm, Weaving Manager LeslieAnn Bestor will demonstrate weaving on a computer-assisted loom, with the opportunity for participants to try it out. And on Friday we will showcase Saori weaving with Mihoko Wakabayashi, who is teaching two Saori classes on Saturday, October 11.
Mini-workshops will also be offered daily from 2–4 pm. These workshops offer a taste of a new technique, a chance to learn a different way to do things or maybe expose yourself to something new. The mini workshops cost $5 each and you can register online, over the phone or in the store.
