Colorwork Lined Mittens

These beautiful lined mittens can be knit in any color or fiber combination. Experiment with your own creativity; pick traditional complementary colors or jazz it up with some brights to spice up your winter accessories! You can even make them with just 2 colors for a unique shading effect. You'll learn stranding, chart-reading, provisional cast-on, and directional knitting, while making an extra-special holiday gift for that special someone...or yourself.

Materials Required:

  • For the outer mitten: 125 yards of a light-worsted-weight yarn for the main color, and 40 yards each of 5 contrasting colors  
  • For the lining: 140 yards of a DK or sport-weight yarn  
  • US size 3, 4, or 5 needles (or size to get the following gauges and measurements: For palm circumference 7.5", 28 sts and 30 rows = 4" in colorwork pattern; palm circumference 8.25", 26 sts and 28 rows = 4" in colorwork pattern, palm circumference  9", 24 sts and 26 rows = 4" in colorwork pattern  
  • Stitch markers  
  • Tapestry needle  
  • Waste yarn

  • Pattern: Fiddlehead Mittens by Adrian Bizilia (15% discount with class. The pattern is available to students of this class for purchase in-store, or call customer service to purchase and pick up in-store)

All materials must be purchased at WEBS

For first swatch:

  1. Using outer mitten yarn, cast on 36 sts. to larger dpns.
  2. Join and work 5 rnds in  St. st. ( knit every rnd.)
  3. On next rnd join a contrasting color and  * k2 with MC, k2 with CC *, repeat from  * to  *  around, remembering to carry floats loosely across the back.
  4. Repeat this rnd 5 more times.
  5. Next rnd,  *k2 with CC, k2 with MC  *, repeat from  * to * around.
  6. Repeat this rnd 5 more times.
  7. Bring to class on needles.

For second swatch: 

  1. Using any size waste yarn and appropriately sized straight needles cast on 18 sts.
  2. K4 rows, Work 1 or 2 inches in
  3. Save on needles for class practice possibilities.
