Knitting the Knitter's Almanac

Have you wanted to knit the projects in Elizabeth Zimmermann's Knitter's Almanac? Now we can do it together! Expand your knitting skills and learn techniques to help you through these timeless projects. Skills include making a sweater in the round from measurements, simple lace, weaving (grafting), steeking, i-cord borders and i-cord cast offs. This semester, we'll make the Open-Collared Pullover, Moccasin Socks, and a washcloth version of the Pi Shawl.

Time: 1:00pm - 5:00pm
Materials Required:

  • For the socks: 400 yards sport or dk superwash yarn (the sample was knit in Liberty Wool Light)
  • For the sweater: Valley Yarns Northfield. Use Ann Budd's Yarn Requirements for yardage needed for your gauge and size.
  • For the Pi Shawl mini: 300 yards dk cotton (sample made with Valley Yarns Longmeadow).  
  • Locking stitch markers
  • Your Knitter's Tool Kit
  • Included in class price: The Knitter's Almanac, Elizabeth Zimmermann

Needles: bring a range so that you can adjust to suit your gauge.

  • For the sweater:  US size 5 (or size to obtain gauge) dpns, 16 inch and 24 inch circulars.
  • For the Pi Shawl washcloth: US size 6 dpns and 16 inch circular.
  • For the socks: US size 3 dpns and 16 inch circulars

HOMEWORK:

  • Knit and block a 6" x 6" swatch in the round, using your sweater yarn.
