Steeks Without the Eeks!

Steeking is a technique used to knit tubes, without interruption, for openings or sleeves. Once finished, the knitted tube is cut in the places where you would like to make an opening or attach another piece. This technique allows you to knit uninterrupted stitch patterns, eliminates purling, and there is no seaming. In this class, we will explore the usefulness of steeks in sweater construction for sleeves, necklines, cardigans, hoods and button bands as well as in shawls and shrugs. So bring your scissors and we’ll practice cutting your knitting, together.

Materials Required:

  • 1 skein light-colored, worsted weight, 100% wool yarn  
  • A small amount of DK or sock weight yarn in a light color that is different from the color of your swatch (see homework)  
  • Size F or G crochet hook  
  • Small scissors  
  • 16” size US 7 circular needles or double-pointed needles (or size needed to get gauge indicated in homework)

  1. Use worsted weight, 100% wool yarn, and needles that will give you a gauge of 4.5 sts = 1”. 
  2. Cast on 72 stitches and join to knit in the round. 
  3. Knit in stockinette stitch until piece measures 4 inches from cast on edge. 
  4. Do not bind off.
