Have you ever admired a sweater with Aran or Gansey patterning? How about a breathtaking lace shawl? These beautiful designs are created with textural techniques that look complicated but are easy to learn. In this four-workshop class, you will work through chart-reading and symbolcraft, as well as many knit and purl stitch patterns, cables, bobbles, lace, and twisted stitch designs.

Skill Level: Intermediate
Instructor: Beth Altimari
Date: Tuesdays - 6/10, 7/1, 8/5, 9/2; 2014
Time: 10:30am - 12:30pm
Materials Required:

  • Several skeins of smooth, light-colored, worsted weight yarn. If you have any suitable yarn in your stash, by all means use it. You will be making 12 large swatches, to be safe, plan on about 90 yards for each swatch.
  • Straight or circular needles in a size that gives a gauge you like for your chosen yarn.
  • Highlighter tape
  • Cable needle
  • A pencil
  • Your Knitting Tool Kit
  • The squares knit in this class could be a great start for a blanket, so you may want to think about that when choosing your yarn; however, this class will not go over joining squares.
  • Required text: Learn-to-Knit Afghan Book by Barbara Walker (note: books that are required for classes can be purchased at a 15% discount.)

For class practice:

  1. With scrap yarn and appropriately sized needles, CO 18 stitches.
  2. Knit 2 rows, work 6 rows in stockinette stitch, ending with a purl row.
  3. Bring to class on needles.
