This class will be an exploration of the world of unique handspun “art yarns”, from color theory, fiber blending and yarn design to the technical spinning and plying techniques that will enable you to create supercoiled yarns, chain-plied and boucle yarns and more. Students must be comfortable spinning a consistent, continuous yarn of various weights. Techniques for both the drop spindle and the spinning wheel will be covered; being comfortable with both tools is recommended.

Prerequisite: Intro to Drop Spindle or Intro to Handspinning

Materials Required:
• Students should bring their own wheel in good working condition and/or a large whorl drop spindle (3-4 in.) (Schacht 4" spindle is recommended)
• Niddy Noddy
• 5-8 oz of BFL, Corriedale, or another long-staple wool; colors welcome
• An optional $20 materials fee for an art batt of spinning fiber
Homework: One half bobbin of thick and thin singles spun clockwise, one half bobbin of worsted-size singles spun clockwise, and one half bobbin of worsted-size singles spun counterclockwise. Please spin these yarns before class as we will need them, in addition to the yarn we will spin during class, to try all of the planned techniques.
