Diane Fernald

A lawyer by day, and a knitter at all other times, Diane grew up surrounded by knitters and tatters throughout her extended family: her mother excelled at knitting intarsia, her aunt at aran cable knits. Her Memere was a tatter extraordinaire, as well as a knitter and crocheter.  When Diane was 5, she remembers sitting in a rocking chair next to her dad, playing with a butter knife, a rubber band and a paper towel roll, pretending she was knitting.  (Odd combo of items, but a child's imagination is limitless, n'est pas?!)  Her mother took pity on her and taught her to knit by the time she was six.  Scarves and doll clothes were the main products of her labors until high school when she started a sweater vest for her boyfriend.  Luckily, she was clueless as to the "Boyfriend Curse" in knitting, and married him several years later; alas, though, the sweater remains unfinished to this day.  As her daughters grew up, knitting took a back seat to law school and raising kids as well as sewing, rug hooking, needlepoint and counted cross stitch, and didn't resurface until her girlfriend got her interested in knitting prayer shawls.  Once the knitting bug took hold, she fell in love with her new obsession all over again, immersing herself in knitting classes, patterns, magazines, retreats, blogs and websites.  In August of 2002, she sat on her porch for a solid week of evenings, teaching herself to knit socks from Nancy Bush's "Folk Socks" - never mind that the first sock was inside out! - she's never looked back and continues to love the whole genre of knitting socks.

Recently completing the Expert Knitter's Program at Webs, Diane has discovered she loves the challenge of designing her own patterns, and fears she'll never look at another pattern again without wanting to "tweak it - just a little bit"! Diane always has several projects on her needles, happily switching from one to the other - "just to keep it interesting"!
