This course is designed for those who have been weaving for a short time and for those who haven't woven recently but want to get started again. Twills are the foundation for many weaves; students will weave a twill gamp (sampler) that includes a regular twill, point twill, M's and W's, skip twill, advancing twill, and others. We'll discuss the structure of each of these weaves, do drawdowns on graph paper, and learn how to alter the appearance of the fabric by changing tie-ups and treadling sequences.
Weaving will be done on your own 4-shaft loom outside of class (loom rental available). Note: Please let the instructor know the weaving width of your loom in advance, so that she can calculate the amount of 10/2 mercerized cotton you will need for your twill gamp.
Skill Level: Advanced Beginner
Prerequisite: Must have the ability to dress a 4-shaft loom
Instructor: Carol Birtwistle
Date: Sundays -7/27, 8/10, 8/24; 2014
Time: 9:00am - 12:00pm
Between the 1st and 2nd class you will be expected to wind your warp, dress your loom, and begin weaving. Between the 2nd and 3rd class, you will complete the weaving and finishing so you can bring the gamp to the last class where each class member will plan a project of his/her own choosing using the gamp as a resource. Your gamp will serve as a library of twill weaves that you will be able to refer back to when planning future projects.
