Schacht Hi-Lo Spindles

Schacht Hi-Lo Spindles offer the best of both whorls: a brass hook at the top for high-whorl spinning and a grooved shaft for low-whorl spinning. Three sizes of drop spindles offer a broad spectrum of spinning capabilities: 3" (2.2 ounces), 4" (3 ounces), and 2" (1.1 ounces). Schacht Hi-Lo Spindles are made of hard maple.

      Comments about Schacht Hi-Lo Spindles:

This is a simple, no-frills spindle that works as-advertised. I purchased the smallest Hi-Lo spindle, which is intended for fine spinning. Very pleasant to use. Though I generally use it as a high-whorl spindle, I really like the ability to use it as a low-whorl also. Nice little spindle.

      Nice basic tool

      By Captain Hook

      from Olympia, WA

      Comments about Schacht Hi-Lo Spindles:

I'm writing this mainly for people who've never spun and are wondering if they should try. Short answer: YES. Really. Yes.

Given the magnitude of my yarn stash, acquired over 20 years, the last thing I need is more yarn. So I've steadfastly avoided buying a spinning wheel in that time, even when really good bargains came my way. Plus I know more sheep farmers than one can shake a fleece at. DANGER. (I've wheel-spun once in my life, 30 years ago, and it was absolutely immediately seriously compelling. I told the friend who shared her wheel with me that if I started doing that, I'd never leave the house.)

But sooner or later I had to try spinning. Playing with sheep hair and the mathematics/physics of spirals--the heart and soul of cosmic order--is at the heart of yarn and fiber addiction. Thus a drop spindle made sense for me, and one can only make SO MUCH yarn at a time this way.

I chose the Schacht Hi-Lo on the basis of it being a lovely, simple tool and its design allowing me to discover which style (high or low whorl) would fit me better.

I bought the large and medium spindles, loved how they felt in the hand, and quickly figured out the motions.

My first effort with the medium spindle and some undyed BFL roving was awful, or so I thought. I did a web search on "why is my handspun yarn so lumpy?" I found no answer to that, only people agonizing over the fact that, having acquired advanced spinning skills, they couldn't figure out how to make that magnificent beginners' lumpy handspun yarn any more!!

Surprised, I took my first 2 ounces of lumpy handspun BFL...knitted it up...and was amazed by how beautiful the resulting fabric was.

      So yeah. I'm hooked.

It's also a whole family activity in that when I spin, everyone sits and stares fixedly at the rising and falling spindle and the forming yarn as I spin. It's like turning on the NASA channel, or engineering videos, or episodes of How It's Made. Everyone suddenly silent and absorbed.

One evening my husband came home from a very stressful day at work and said, "Would you mind spinning for awhile?" Um, OK, do you want me out of the room? "Oh, NO. I want to watch. It's so relaxing." He sat there drinking tea and watching the fibers twist and the spindle rise and fall. After about five minutes he sighed deeply, indicating him releasing the day's tensions.

I only wish that Schacht made a smaller version of this spindle. I've managed to make some pretty thin yarn with the medium spindle, but am going to order the small one to see how low I can go...and also try spinning up some finer fibers.

This is a beautiful spindle. I asked my husband to add an extra notch so that it would be easier for me to use and it is much better even though it looks like I've defiled it. It's functionality is improved.

          Comments about Schacht Hi-Lo Spindles:

I had never spun before and this is a great beginners spindle. I used it as to whorl only and dropped it plenty of times and it was attacked by my cat several times and so it is durable. My only recommendation for a beginner is maybe to also get a lighter weight spindle. I quickly spun thin yarn and now I wish I had a lighter weight one. Anyway I'm completely happy with this one and I recommend it.

            Comments about Schacht Hi-Lo Spindles:

Very pretty spindle. The whorl has a pretty curve shape on the top and is nicely polished. It gives off a kind of shine when you spin it. Very pretty. I own 2 other handmade spindles, but this one's wood work is better than both of those. It's very balanced when spun, and the long shaft holds a lot of yarn.

The shipping was fast, but my spindle arrived with the dowel poking out of the box and could have gotten damaged.

This is my first ever spindle, and it works great! I like that I could try out both the high and the low whorl configurations. The 4" whorl has a nice, long spin, but it's a little too heavy for spinning very fine singles. All in all, I don't think I'll need another spindle for a looong while. I love this thing!
