I bought one of these a few years ago thinking it was a self-indulgent little treat...and boy, was I wrong!

Winding yarn into cakes lets me organize my stash and workbag (DeWalt and Husky gator bags) better. The center-pull yarn cakes treat the yarn nicely by giving them structure (I wind a band of old-fashioned adding-machine paper tape around each cake, with the yarn label taped on). It saves my working hands and wrists from the painful repetitive motions of winding. It goes really fast! The cakes are much less prone to "yarn barf." And it makes the continual pulling out of lengths of yarn in use much easier and smoother. I normally park my in-process yarn cakes in a small metal mixing bowl or various plastic bins.

Also I live with a house chicken, and while normally demure, she turns into SoccerSaurus when a rolling/in-use yarn ball is visible. The yarn cake format doesn't seem to intrigue her as much, so she settles for kicking finished unmated socks around the room.

I used to be frustrated by the size limit of about 100 g (which you can extend a bit if you work carefully and gently nudge the guide-loop wire outward while controlling the angle the yarn feeds onto the spool). Over time I've gotten used to it.

Best of all, winding my stash into yarn cakes has, ahem, let me buy more yarn. You can take that as a cautionary observation. Neatly wrapped yarn cakes take up much less space than the various balls and skeins. I have a rule that I cannot buy more yarn unless there is space in my existing storage system.

One last thing, I use this tool to wind yarn cakes from skeins directly off the yarn swift I hacked from an IKEA tabletop lazy susan. It might also work with the other sorts of swifts as well.

    Good for small balls

This works great as long as you don't want more than a 4oz ball. It is pretty useless to wind any larger hanks or skeins.

      Comments about Royal Ball Winder:

This method is so much easier then having a 'ball' of yarn bouncing around you. Once you finish winding, pull the yarn from the middle for ease of use. If the yarn pulls out in a clump don't worry gently (and easily) loosen the clump and continue. I often will put the finished winder 'ball' in a bag (plastic or fabric) while using it. Then when I put the project down it all goes into the bag.

Making an afghan with lots and lots of yarn. Could have asked the yarn store to wind, but it would have taken them a good while. Happy to have this convenient gizmo to save the day!

Great investment...I re-took up crocheting with the encouragement from a friend as a relaxation technique and quickly got interested in lacy projects and fine yarns. But all the time winding took away from my projects. This really is a time saver. I made my own swift to go with it for less than $15.
