I love knitting socks and sock yarn can be expensive. By dying my own, I can be creative and thrifty. The Franklin cone yarn is pretty rough and coarse until after you wash it and dye it and wash it again with woolite. I have colored it with food coloring and the brightness of the colors is amazing. I will be trying some fast acid powder dyes next. Since I knit the socks to give away as gifts for my sponsors for the MS Bike tour, I am always looking for an affordable way of keeping the cost down. The service was amazing and I can't wait till I get my next shipment. I only wish that shipping to Canada was not so expensive.

I bought this based on the popular positive reviews; what a mistake! It does pick up a little loft once dyed but it stays scratchy and fuzzy. The deepest saturation it took was still a foggy version of the intended hue. It is harsh to touch and was literally scraping through my skin as I was skeining it up. I can't sell this or products made from it - my clients wouldn't believe I'd present such a low-quality, unpleasant wool to them. Thoroughly disappointed, waste of money and now a waste of space in my studio.

Comments about Valley Yarns Franklin Natural Cones:

I needed a lot of neutral sock weight yarn for background in two queen size blankets. This fits the bill. I haven't washed, blocked, or dyed yet so I can't speak to dye-ability or how the yarn might bloom over time. Unwashed it is a light fingering.

Comments about Valley Yarns Franklin Natural Cones:

I dye yarn for sale, and when my in laws bought me this to have a lot of yarn on hand to sell, I was slightly put off by the texture at first. But once dyed it felt softer and held the color beautifully. It is also easier to work with it on my warping board straight off the cone, but next time I may pay for wind off service for half of a cone so that I can do variegated color ways easier than winding myself via a niddy noddy.

I like this yarn Cory dying and making socks. The only thng I don't like is one cone has a tighter twist than the other. Not sure why the difference. I prefer the not so tight twist. I just have to be aware of thy when knitting my socks.

It's a really nice sock base. It's a little 'tight' prior to washing, but once prepped, dyed and dried, it blooms nicely and is really perfect. I'm currently using it for lace knitting & amigurumi dolls as well.

Comments about Valley Yarns Franklin Natural Cones:

Really like how this yarn blooms after washing. Excellent for socks, lace, baby items, pretty much anything. Sometimes I hold it doubled for a thicker yarn.
We have a large family and ten grandchildren, so there's always a good use for a practical yarn with good yardage such as this.
