As a German and Italian sock yarn addict, and very active outdoors, I look for the four Ws: wearability, wickiness, weight, and weatherworthiness. We spend nearly all the year with our bodies doused in part or whole with rain, snow, riverrun, or seawater. Tried this yarn for my usual crocheted socks (B hook or smaller, toe up, simple 3/2 cuff, add-after heel) and found it pleasant in the hand, good stitch definition, a nice springiness, and comfy to wear. Granted, here in the coastal/rainforest PNW most of us wear either hiking sandals or boots year round, so our comfy might not be the same as others'. But I liked this yarn. I found it a bit on the splitty side but working a loftier sock yarn with the smallest possible hook and tighter tension tends to go that way. I quickly figured out how to rotate my old Boye hook an iota each stitch to offset that problem. I was warned not to machine wash and dry this yarn, so since the first gentle/warm machine wash to bloom the yarn, I've thrown the socks in the Handwash Woolens basket and dry them next to the woodstove (we don't machine dry any of our socks; wears them out too fast). Unbeatable price on a very nice yarn.
Comments about Araucania Ranco:
Somesites say this yarn is machine washable ... and the hangtag does as well. BUT DON'T DO IT. I washed mine in a lingerie bag on cold/cold short wash delicate setting and the socks were almost felted beyond use. Fortunately, I was able to salvage them ... but they were a bit large to begin with. Bottom line: Love the semi-solid colors, but not so crazy about handwashing socks. This yarn would make a really gorgeous cardi ... a far better use for it, I think. Pilling has been low so far.

I love the very slight variations in color. And it seems to find the right balance between soft and sturdy. Would buy again.
Comments about Araucania Ranco:
Have bought lots of different colours. Not all were as I expected, but they were still lovely colours and beautiful to knit with. Have hand washed in cold water with no problems. Machine washed one pair which have started to get a little bit felted, but haven't shrunk, yet! Would definitely recommend this yarn.
Comments about Araucania Ranco:
Nice sock yarn at a good price. Take care if you want to machine wash it because my socks shrank slightly when I washed them in warm water and let them air dry (perhaps cold water and gentle cycle would eliminate that problem).
Comments about Araucania Ranco:
Nice tight twist for stitchwork and love the color variations. Well behaved. I believe ball band says handwash/dryclean but I threw the socks in the washer (cold water) & dryer (on the cooler side) and they're perfect.
