This yarn works well for crochet, doesn't split or snag. I've seen comments that it doesn't work as well for knitting (I haven't tried that), but it works like a dream for crochet projects! Color note: I did find that the actual yarn color was noticeably darker than presented on the website.

First, this is a beautiful looking yarn, but...

I had planned on using it for the contrasting cuffs and collars on a crocheted sweater. The sweater was done in Cascade 220 Superwash, which is a workhorse, and comes in great colors!

Naively, I thought the tencel in Lustra would stop it from felting. Wow, am I glad I did a swatch and threw it in the washer and dryer! (Yes,that's rough treatment, but I really wanted to test it.) The result: while it only lost about 15% of its size, all that beautiful sheen and luster was gone, replaced by fuzz. The color intensity was still there, but none of the shine; what a disappointment!

Furthermore, had I crocheted the cuffs, etc.,then washed the sweater, they would have shrunk, making the sweater unwearable, and I would have had to *cut* them off because of the felting.

Every other comment on splitting (not so bad in crochet, very frustrating when knitting) is true, and it sheds even in the process of winding the ball from the swift. I'm not even sure it will make good scarves, because any neck abrasion (from a man's beard growth, say) will quickly fuzz the shine right off them.

I'm going to try using it stranded with something else, to see if I can mitigate the felting and loss of sheen. I can see using something that's 100% tencel or other non-fuzzy fiber, although it's a shame to lose the color intensity.

Even hand washing it swatch will result in some pilling and fuzziness, and definite loss of shine.

Lovely yarn

      Comments about Berroco Lustra:

I've made three sweaters with this lovely yarn over the years as well as hats and mittens. The colors are extraordinary and the finished products are positively regal. Like many yarns of this type, the pilling problem is unfortunate. However, I overcome that by simply telling myself that a Lustra sweater is not a forever sweater, and I set it aside when the pills get too bad. Buying it on sale makes it easier to achieve that attitude. The yarn knits up quickly and is a joy to knit with. It has nice stitch definition despite the softness and haze. Be very careful when blocking as it can stretch quite a bit. It responds well to very agressive blocking techniques if that is your goal. (Been there, done that, out of sheer desperation to make it fit.) Like many single ply yarns it splits a bit, so I would not suggest it for a beginner. That said, it has the advantage of making even a beginner's easy project look like a masterpiece. This is one of the few yarns that I stockpile when I see it on sale because I know I will always use it all up, even the little leftover pieces.

This is exactly what I wanted for the Marit Lage dice bag I was making and it came just as it appears on the website. Usually I prefer to buy yarn in the store, but I'd never seen a yarn like this before and I needed it immediately. If I ever have need of a shiny yarn again, I'd pick this one in a heartbeat. It was a joy to work with.

              Comments about Berroco Lustra:

Even though this is a beautiful yarn, I wasn't thrilled with the feel of this yarn when knitting and it would split more easily than I like. It did make a beautiful chain stitch for a pillow. The trouble came when I was stitching the bottom of the pillow with a darning needle. Every two or three stitches, the yarn pulled apart making it almost impossible to use the original yarn to close the bottom.

Would not recommend for anything that gets used with any rigor.

Webs service was as always flawless. I bought this yarn along with another for a specific project. The hat turned out very nicely. This yarn is pretty and has a nice sheen to it. Be aware that it splits easily and can knot easily when ripping stitches after mistakes (and did I make them on this project!). It is a beautiful yarn when worked. I am getting together an order for my next project and it does include this yarn.

I have used Lustra for two projects, so far. One is a wrap vest. The other is a large poncho. Lustra is a tactile delight to work with. I'm a crocheter, using an H Hook. The sheen from the Tencel is really lovely and of course, the wool adds warmth. Your volume discount and sale price for discontinued colors makes this a luxury yarn at a resonable price.
