Comments about Blue Sky Alpacas Melange:
The best yarn I've ever used, and I have very expensive, almost snobby taste when it comes to fibers. I made a slouchy hat from this, using a simple extended beanie seed-stitch pattern, and EVERYONE loves it. I was in a knitting shop the other day and 8 separate people asked for the pattern, and the kind of yarn that it's made from. I taught my roommate to knit so she could make the same hat, from this yarn. If you double up, this yarn is a luxurious heft, and you can really feel the texture of a stitch like seed or moss. I'm planning my next project, a long robe, from this yarn, for me with a big piece like this, there's no other choice.

The first vest I made with the Blue Sky Alpaca was in the eggplant. My friend liked it so much that I'm making her one in the pretty light blue/teal. As with the eggplant, the color in person is a lot deeper than the color you see on the web site. It's lovely yarn - great drape, no knots, not itchy and I'm allergic to wool. I'd give it a five-star rating but it does have the hairs which I wish it didn't.

I am making my 20 year old daughter a 'blankie'. This fiber far exceeds cashmere in softness. The drape is beautiful, and has a soft, baby light feel to it. It holds the pattern well. I had never worked with this fiber before, and would recommend it again and again. I am all ready thinking what I can make next with this fiber. I have attached a picture of a strip of the blankie...

...and I almost didn't want to finish the sweater, it was so soft and pleasant to work with. You do have to be careful -- the lovely drape means you can't just weave ends in on the reverse (they'll show), you have to change skeins at the end of a row. But stitch definition is out of this world, colors are gorgeous -- and I get so many compliments on my sweater!
Comments about Blue Sky Alpacas Melange:
I love this yarn. I knit with it enough to review it now. The colors are so beautiful and luminous that you never get tired of them. The knit fabric is soooooooo soft, the stitches so even, and the gauge so on target perfect every time. I just knitted a lace poncho out of this that called for mohair, but I can't stand the itch anymore. It is just beautiful. I typically knit sweaters. Beautiful by itself or great for showing off aran stitches. I knit this yarn at 22/28 on 5's, 22/30 on 4's and 25/31 on 3's. Doubled it knits beautifully at 4 or 4.5 stitches to the inch. The fabric has pilled where my cross body bags bother it, but the pills come off when combed. The yardage is not great and this yarn is expensive, but it is worth it. Not a novelty, definitely a classic yarn. I don't have a substitute and I hope it is never discontinued. Unlike a lot of alpaca yarns, there is absolutely no splitting and it does not get wound up and stick to itself. Slight fuzz; no hair.
