I'm not regretting buying this yarn, but neither can I recommend it to others without pointing out its limitations. I bought this yarn to make a felted bible case. Softness was not a priority since the final product wouldn't be worn next to the skin, and I'd read other reviews that stated that it softens with washing. I knitted a swatch to get the exact felted gauge, and it behaved like it should, softening as reported by others. So in that respect, the yarn is serving its purpose. But I can't imagine what else I'd use it for than felting, since the yarn is very coarse, stiff, and rough as you're knitting, and it takes a great deal of agitation while felting to get the fabric to any degree of softness. There was too much twist put in it during spinning, so it kinks up a great deal (see photo) and must be constantly straightened out as you knit. The twist also put a slant to the fabric, which necessitated stretching and reshaping it often as I felted the bag. Also, there was a fair amount of "trash" in the yarn (see second photo) that had to be picked out as I knit. Trash is nearly impossible to get out of the final felted product, so this picking out slows down knitting speed. The price was pretty good, and the color (Medium Grey) seems to be natural and undyed, therefore perfect for my project. I've used Cascade 220 Paints for other projects with none of the laborious problems encountered with this yarn, and would have used it for this one also, except that the grey heathered color I wanted isn't among the Cascade color choices. The price difference between the two brands isn't enough to make me choose Briggs & Little in the future, unless I once again can't find the color I'm after.

Comments about Briggs & Little Heritage:

This is old school yarn. Some people would say coarse but I say it has character and staying power. I love the texture- no sagging, no pilling, warm. A friend has a sweater I knitted more than 20 years ago that looks brand-new and he wears it all the time. This is my go to if I want to sweater that you can actually wear outdoors when it's cold outside. It comes in different weights so the bulk can be managed. Very easy to work with. No "designer" colors but a good range.

Comments about Briggs & Little Heritage:

I absolutely love this yarn. It is a rustic yarn--think whole multigrain with seeds rather than Wonder Bread. You get some vegetable matter, and a sturdy, solid texture that some people find scratchy. I wear it next to the skin and love it--it feels warm and robust and wholesome to me. The price is right, and the yardage is generous. It is easy to spit-splice because it is not superwash, but in the 20+ skeins I've knit with, I do not think I've found a single knot.

I do wish that WEBS carried more colors--like Dark Gray. I got Briggs & Little Regal in Dark Gray from another retailer, and the color is wonderful. Just sayin, WEBS--if you stock them, they will sell.

Comments about Briggs & Little Heritage:

I used this yarn for an outerwear sweater. It's too rough for next-to-skin wear; that said, it is a fabulous yarn for sweaters worn with a shirt underneath. It's sturdy, and I think it will wear very well without pilling. There is vegetable matter in the yarn, it's easy to pick it out but if that bothers you I wouldn't recommend the yarn. It shows cables beautifully. It felts well, so spit-splicing it is very easy. It would also be a good yarn to use to make felted bags.

Comments about Briggs & Little Heritage:

I ordered this yarn to knit the Plaits and Links Cardigan in Interweave Knits Winter 2013. I wanted a rustic, heavy weight yarn, and after considerable research chose Briggs and Little Heritage. It is coarse and does have bits of hay and straw in it. However, it works with this pattern and yielded the kind of fabric I wanted. I don't find it too coarse to work with. The high twist, while it does not always feed easily through the fingers, gives it good structure and stability. I would use this yarn again for a similar garment. I did not give it five stars only because I do not know what "perfect" is.

            Service and delivery comments:

Customer Service was very helpful when I initially ordered the wrong color. They cancelled the original order, giving me an opportunity to re-order. Delivery was prompt and the contents were as ordered.

Comments about Briggs & Little Heritage:

I order two skeins of brown heather and one of ragg. I made wool socks from the Briggs & Little Heavy Sock pattern of brown with constrasting toe, heel, and two stripes at the cuff. It is rough wool but knits very nicely and quickly. I like the color options and how it knits. I did a soak of room tempature water and a drop or two of fabric softener then laid flat to dry. Softened the right up. My two cons I checked was that it is pretty scratchy/coarse to knit with and maybe it was the way I winded my yarn but it twisted while I was knitting.

I highly recommend for heavy wool socks.

I used this yarn to knit a pattern I really like the second time. It is a sweater jacket that has a pattern. This yarn shows the pattern well, knits up firmly so it will hold its shape. I love that it is its natural color. Without being dyed, it is very easy on hands. I look forward to wearing this when the weather turns cooler.
