Mango Moon Recycled Silk Yarn

Each skein of Mango Moon's recycled fiber yarn is a unique, handspun creation. These yarns retain the beautiful colors of the saris and sarongs they came from, so no two skeins are exactly alike.  Colors will vary since each skein is unique.  Handspun in Nepal.

Note: Handspun yarn varies; suggested gauge is only a guideline.

Comments about Mango Moon Recycled Silk Yarn:

You can't wind it into a ball, it sticks to itself, tangles, it's the worst thing I ever used. I managed to make a hat with stocking stitch, lace was impossible. Even an SSK didn't work. I'll never use something like this again.

Comments about Mango Moon Recycled Silk Yarn:

I made a simple capelet with this yarn and it is drop dead gorgeous. I get compliments every time I wear it. I used size 11 needles and a simple garter/stockinette stitch. Paired with a deep, cobalt blue cotton, the colors vibrate. The yarn has a nice weight to it and is perfect for this summer accessory.

Comments about Mango Moon Recycled Silk Yarn:

I am a weaver, not a knitter and stumbled upon this product when looking for something to use with some other silk yarns from my mom's stash. The colors worked and I grabbed it. I wove this into a warp of linen & hemp, the sett was 24 epi. In addition I was doing a Bronson Lace pattern. All of the yarns were larger than I normally use, including the Mango Moon. I did mix the fibers as I wove, sometimes using a fine tencel to anchor the larger fibers. I couldn't be happier with the results. The final shawl has a wonderful drape, nice handfeel and is unexpectedly soft. I will be purchasing more in the future...I think the key to sucess with this is to mix it in with other yarns which allows the colors and textures to really impact the whole project.

Comments about Mango Moon Recycled Silk Yarn:

I love the idea behind this yarn: recycling fabric, providing jobs where needed. The colors and sheen are truly amazing, as well.

Color: The colors in each hank are put together well. Beware, however, if you want to make any project requiring more than 1 hank. Getting any 2 to match up well is challenging. If you like variety and surprises, this is a great yarn for you!

Texture: It's quite soft overall, though varies greatly in coarseness. I've knitted 12-15 hanks of this in the last year, so am very familiar with it. Some sections are as thin as lace weight yarn, others as thick as super bulky. I don't find this to be a problem, but it was surprising the first time I used it. Sometimes there are bits of paper or plastic entwined with the silk but I've never had trouble pulling them loose. I've not had trouble with the twisting that others mention, but do be prepared to have 1-2 breaks per hank. I use a weaver's knot to secure those.

Weight: This yarn is *extremely* heavy!! It makes interesting accents against solid colors (cuffs, collars, bottom trim) but for a full garment, even something as small as a vest, I wouldn't suggest it. It doesn't drape at all, or hold any kind of shape.

Scarves: I find that a single hank makes a beautiful scarf in a very simple lace stitch (like k2, YO, p2tog). It does *not* make fringe well, so don't bother trying. I have found that somewhat large silver beads (inexpensive from a hobby store) make a nice finsh at both ends of the scarf. I thread them on the yarn before CO, then add 1 at about every 1-1.5 inches in my first row and the same in the last row before binding off. The silver really stands out against the bright colors of the silk. On a scarf, the beads also help the ends to lie more flatly against or towards the body and give it a more finished look.

Trade off: Pretty and fun, not perfect

Comments about Mango Moon Recycled Silk Yarn:

I used it to make a cap sleeved Cardi- kinda risky considering how heavy it is, but that was my risk to take :). I did find that there was a lot of debris woven into the yarn- mostly slivers of wood or what looked like pine needles or rosemary. Because of it's recycled nature, it unspun a couple times, but only 2-3 times in 3 skeins. It still has a nice feel and I don't regret the puchase.

Comments about Mango Moon Recycled Silk Yarn:

I love the concept of the Nepal Women's project and the breathtaking sheen and color of this yarn. However I found it unpleasant to use. First, there is a cacaphony of color, so this yarn is best used as an accent. Next it is so heavy you have to be mindful that it drops/sags instead of draping unless it's added in sparingly. Lastly, I found myself unwinding the yarn frequently because it was so tightly spun. Plus it was necessary to twist out mysterious debris that had spun in with the silk as I went.

The scarf I made is for a very socially conscious young woman, and I know she'll love the piece, it's both elegant and causal. I used the silk as a chain link pattern over royal blue Araucania Azapa. However I really didn't enjoy knitting this yarn. As easily as my head is turned by shiny fibers, I will not buy this particular yarn again.

Comments about Mango Moon Recycled Silk Yarn:

I love the idea, but it is tiring, constantly having to stop and let the fabric unspin as you use it, and do not unspin it too much, as it will come apart and you have to make a knot to continue.
It is beautiful when made up, but not satisfying to use.
