Malabrigo Arroyo

Malabrigo Arroyo is a super soft, superwash merino wool in Malabrigo's gorgeous colors. The versatile sport weight is a great choice for finer gauge projects with beautiful stitch definition — perfect for garments, accessories, and more! Made in Uruguay.

Note: As with all hand-dyed yarns, colors vary from dye lot to dye lot. The yarn color you receive may look different than the color pictured below, and the skeins may vary one from the other even within the same bag. To ensure random color distribution, work from two balls of yarn at once, alternating a few rows from each ball.

Please note: Malabrigo Arroyo is produced in dye lots of 5. Any order for more than 5 skeins will be of mixed dye lots.

I purchased 2 skeins and didn't use them until November as I was really unsure what to do with a sportweight yarn (I've been working with fingering weight for most of the year). However, as soon as I cast on a hat, it was immediately clear that Arroyo is unique and wonderful. A month later I purchased 6 more skeins!

It has amazing stitch definition and a lot of that has to do with what a full and plump sport weight it is. I can think of no other yarn in dk or sport weights that has such bounce and maintains it after washing and blocking. It's also wonderful for winter items for when a worsted hat or cowl can become too warm. It's fantastic as a 3-season weight or for those working or coming and going indoors and outdoors who don't want to remove clothing each time.

The item I kept which I made is a simple hat in the English Rose colorway and I receive questions and compliments each time I wear it. Everyone so far has assumed it has silk or chenille fibers in it since it does have a slight and beautiful sheen.

The only downside is a couple of colorways I had wanted have been out of stock everywhere for several months. Malabrigo has an absolute winner here!

This is not the arroyo I know and love! Very splitty and thin, hopelessly difficult knit, but the worst problem is that it crocked (or bled) all over my hands. After knitting only five rounds, my fingers are stained black; this color did not come off after soaking in the tub and scrubbing it. As I planned to use it in a multicolor scarf, it's unusable because it would bleed onto the other colors and onto my neck and onto my clothes. I'll return the one skein that hasn't been wound. I guess I'll have to eat the other one, but I sure am unhappy! I do not expect products of this quality to be marketed by your company. And shame on malabrigo!

Comments about Malabrigo Arroyo:

Love this yarn! It is so easy to work with. I have used this for hats and scarves. Now using most recent purchase for a cardigan. Color consistency can be an issue when using multiple hanks on one project but I think it just adds to the overall beauty and uniqueness of the project and yarn. I have noticed minimal fading with washing but this also helps to mellow out some of the inconsistencies between hanks.

      Comments about Malabrigo Arroyo:

Totally in love with this yarn. Gorgeous colors, very soft even for next to the skin items, beautiful stitch definition. I used it for both lacy shawls and purl/knit scarves with simple patterns, and it worked nicely for both. Things to watch out for: 1) even within the same dye lot each batch will not have exactly the same shades/hues. If your project requires more than one batch, make sure you alternate the skeins. 2) Color may fade a little bit after washing, but it is still great.

      Beautiful and satisfying to knit

      Comments about Malabrigo Arroyo:

I am an advanced beginning knitter. I still need a yarn with substance, but I don't care for bulky knits. This yarn is perfect. I have made a half dozen shawls, triangle scarves, and neck pieces using this yarn. It is substantial but not too heavy. The colors are beautiful and each color lends its own texture to the project.

      Comments about Malabrigo Arroyo:

You have to be prepared for lots of color variation, even within the same dye lot--but all are beautiful. I use the Rambling Rows mitered afghan pattern and each one comes out both unique and gorgeous. The color-play is fascinating to work with and never boring, no matter how big the project. Have used other Malabrigo yarns besides Arroyo and each one has been fabulous.

      Malabrigo is Gorgeous, But . . .

      Comments about Malabrigo Arroyo:

This yarn is gorgeous, but Malabrigo cannot be depended upon to stay within the color range expected from one batch to the next. I'm very disappointed that this particular batch is TOTALLY different than another batch of the same color that I've had in the past. When making purchases online, this makes it especially difficult if you are trying to match another yarn in your project.

      Great yarn

      By QuintessentiAl

      from Washington, DC/ Telluride CO

      Verified Buyer

      Comments about Malabrigo Arroyo:

Love this yarn for shawls and scarves. A pleasure to knit with, consistently wound and smooth throughout. Colors are gorgeous, but be prepared for considerable variation from skein to skein, even within dye lots. Have used doubled for hats rather than using same colored worsted, when toned-down variegation is desired. Yarn grows a lot when blocking but a warm dryer can return it to desired size. Gets even softer and blooms a bit when washed while still retaining good stitch definition. My favorite sport weight non-solid colored yarn.

          Comments about Malabrigo Arroyo:

My mother picked this out for me to make her a keyhole scarf. I'm allergic to lanolin so I've avoided wool since I took up knitting again a year ago. I read online that superwash wool has so much lanolin washed out of it that allergic people may not react to it. I took a chance on it. I can knit with Arroyo just fine. It's very different to knit with wool after working so much cotton, alpaca, and man made blends. No wonder people like it so much. It's amazingly stretchy and springy in the cross section and doesn't try to leap off of chrome plated brass needles. It doesn't shed like alpaca. I hope I get more commissions to use this yarn!

In the two hanks I got there were no knots. I wound my balls by hand and there was no tangling. One ball weighed 97 g, the other 102 g.
