Madelinetosh Tosh Sock

Madelinetosh Tosh Sock yarn is absolutely stunning. The delicately hand dyed yarn comes in beautiful colors and is super soft. The yarn has excellent stitch definition. It is perfect for lacey socks. Some hanks in the latest shipment are mislabeled as 420 yards - the correct yardage is 395.

Please note: Each skein of Tosh Sock is unique. There are no dye lots and skeins may vary. The yarn color you receive may look different than the color pictured.

Knitting with this color has turned my hands blue each time I knit. Looking forward to finishing this project. It will be really pretty and worth the blue fingers. I'll make sure to do a vinegar rinse to get the rest of the extra color out before I give the project as a gift.

          Comments about Madelinetosh Tosh Sock:

I have been collecting two hanks each in different colorways of Tosh Sock since the beginning of the year & just used my first one to make beautiful, great fitting socks. I plan to knit the Love Potion #6 shawl with some of the "leftovers", after I finish some in every one of the nine colors in my stash.

I love that it is 100% wool; it is soft, squishy, tightly wound & delightful. There are so many colorways from which to choose!

          Service and delivery comments:

Great customer service & prompt delivery! When I called & asked WEBS to mail my yarn instead of sending it UPS -which is so slow- they immediately changed the shipping method to accommodate me.

          Comments about Madelinetosh Tosh Sock:

I love Tosh Sock. After a daring game of yarn chicken with the sweater I've been working on for months, I ran out. I couldn't find a single store in NYC that stocked my color (Calligraphy) including the shop where I bought my original skeins. I ordered one skein from Webs. The color was VERY different from the other skeins. I know that Tosh Sock doesn't have a dye lot, but this wasn't even close. All of the other skeins of Calligraphy that I've seen are a pearly grey color. This was a pink-grey with flecks of hot pink! The label was marked "Calligraphy" but it was brown paper instead of white -- perhaps an indication that they've changed the dye process for that color? I do NOT recommend purchasing this color to supplement an existing skein of Calligraphy.

That said, the customer service experience was second to none. No hassles about returning. This was my first purchase from Webs. Even though the yarn didn't meet my color needs, the service was so great that I'll definitely be back.

          Comments about Madelinetosh Tosh Sock:

I made a vest for my husband using a standard guage knitting machine. It makes a good men's garment. I don't think its soft enough gor against the skin. It would be nice if they dyed more than one skein at a time because the color change between skeins can be noticeable. I don't particularly like the striped effect of alternating skeins every two rows.

          Comments about Madelinetosh Tosh Sock:

Is merino wool that is not treated to be machine washable no longer spun and available as a base yarn? Why would anyone pay a premium price for wool yarn and then machine wash items knitted with it? No-rinse products make handwashing so easy. The process of making it machine washable robs it of the elasticity that makes me love wool yarn. That said, Tosh merino sock yarn has marvelously soft, squishy "feel", and colors are amazing - until one tries to find two skeins of the same color that match. I finally broke down and ordered enough skeins for a sweater and matching socks because an exhaustive color search rendered Tosh as the only choice. I relied on WEBS customer service to do the matching of skeins and received all but one that look alike in the hank and one that looks "different" that will be used for the socks. I haven't begun knitting yet but am hoping that that the sweater won't reveal marked differences among the skeins. I have used Tosh merino for many one-skein items and absolutely love it for color and texture but not for the loss of elasticity. Every manufacturer of merino yarn seems to have jumped on the machine washable bandwagon, though. Tip: be sure to swatch, and then wash and dry the swatch at least three times before determining gauge if you don't want to end up with something that may be too large for its intended purpose.

I chose "Calligraphy" to make a pullover sweater for myself. I wanted something lightweight, but soft and warm, and this yarn is perfect. No one does dying better than MadelineTosh - the colors have depth and warmth. I didn't switch skeins on the body of the sweater and had no pooling. This color has very subtle color changes. I did alternate skeins on the sleeves - but mainly because one skein was quite a bit lighter and I needed to work it in. I enjoyed working with it and will definitely use it again for my next sweater! It has a tight twist and great stitch definition.

                Comments about Madelinetosh Tosh Sock:

Don't mind me, I'm a huge Tosh fan! I love their colors, the way the yarn feels as I knit it, the strength of it. I knit to sell small items. Since many people are allergic to wool and I don't want to work with acrylics, I went to superwash. And this is where the love-fest with Tosh yarns began. That plus the absoluteiy gorgeous colors.
Things to think through, however, when using Madelintosh yarns: the pictures of their colors can be very different than what you get. I recommend doing a Google Images or Ravelry search to see what one looks like knit up. The multi-colorways will hide stitch patterns - if you want them to pop, go for solids. There are no true "solids" in Tosh, which is why I love their yarns. If it matters to you, look elsewhere. Handwashes beautifully. I do NOT put art in the washing machine no matter what it says it can do.
