A nice quiet yarn for socks and garments

By Captain Hook

from Olympia, WA

Regia Terra is yet another classic Regia sock yarn, this time in very quiet colors that work up into a softly figured fabric. It's especially suitable for gentlemen's socks but also nice for fine knits or even lace (if you carefully choose your lace pattern with the yarn's color changes in mind).

I've written repeatedly about Regia's being my favorite of the German sock yarns for their durability, colorfastness, dimensional stability, washability, and so on. I like the happy and bright color lines, but sometimes one wants to go quieter. My stash includes pretty much every German sock yarn...but I return again and again to simple old Regia.

I make simple crocheted socks for wear inside hiking/work boots/sandals here in the coastal Pacific Northwest's various seasons of wet and our short time of hot/dry weather (in which we often get our socks wet in rivers and at the beach). I can't say enough about how comfortable and versatile our Regia socks are.

I have pairs of Regia yarn socks that are going on five years old, laundered (but air or line dried) weekly in that time, still in magnificent shape. Granted, crocheted socks are thicker and don't wear as fast as knitted ones. But my husband used to blow out his store-boughten socks constantly till I started making them for him to fit his deep heel and high arches. Now even he has favorites from year to year.

I also love Regia sock yarn for finely knitted items. The yarn's color changes might yield stitch definition that's different than you expect from a single-color or tweedy yarn, but I've used similarly patterned Regia yarns (like Nordic) to good effect in vests, mittens, hats, and scarves.
