Berroco Weekend DK

Berroco Weekend DK is a finer gauge cousin of the popular Weekend yarn. Weekend DK is the same soft blend of acrylic and cotton, in fun, bright colors with a little shine. You'll love the drape and coolness of garments knit and crocheted in Weekend DK, as well as its stitch memory. Made in Peru.

Weekend is the only yarn I use when I knit gifts for anyone in my brother's family. They love the things I knit, but they are hopeless with laundry. This stuff is the most machine-washable yarn I have ever met. In addition to my upcoming nephew's "baby trousseau", I have knit a sweater for myself and can attest to its softness. The range of colors can't be beat. It has a lovely smooth texture and doesn't feel like a cheap acrylic blend. And SO affordable!

When they say "finer gauge" they're not kidding. I'd call this sport weight, or maybe even fingering. Do NOT try to use this as a substitute for actual DK yarn.

If you're looking for this yarn to make Melissa Leapman's Wear Everywhere Cardigan from the 29 Feb 16 issue of Crochet World, be aware that the colorway called for, #2975 Iris, is NOT the hot pink color shown in all the photos. This Iris is more of a pinky purple. I don't know whether they actually used another color for the model piece, or rather this is a lighting or processing issue, but either way, it's not that color.

Also, it comes in hanks. [sigh] I really hate winding balls. Why does any big yarn company sell hanks? I get it with tiny little one-person dying operations, but the big companies can ball or skein our yarn for us. If they don't, it's because they choose not to. Minus a star for that.

All that said, this is a decent yarn. It's strong and smooth, doesn't split very easily, and it's decent to work with. It's not as plasticky as 100% acrylic tends to be; if you want something with the wear and washability of acrylic but with more of a natural feel to it, this could work.

I probably won't buy this again -- my mom asked me to make her this cardigan, using the called-for yarn -- but I'm not disappointed with it, and once I was done winding balls, I didn't find it annoying or frustrating to work with, aside from the fact that I like working with DK and this is NOT DK.

      Comments about Berroco Weekend DK:

I love the color and feel of this yarn. It is a pleasure to knit with, and it has a nice drape and sheen, not stiff at all. I am using it on a mock wrap sweater, and so far it is perfect.

One skein of the seven that I ordered had a few knots, and the strands were not evenly spun, but only for a small section. Also, it is a 4-ply, and very easy to split the plies if you are not careful; although it is easy to see the mistake and correct.

I would definitely use this yarn again, and I would recommend it to anyone who likes a good deep color, sheen and drape.

        Comments about Berroco Weekend DK:

I use this yarn quite a bit for crocheted beach cover-ups and openwork tunics. Also summer hats for kids. I live in Florida, most big chain stores carry too much wintry heavy yarn. So thanks Berrocco for making Weekend dk .

        Comments about Berroco Weekend DK:

I'm making a vest for my 7 year old granddaughter. This is great yarn for children, especially for summer warm, or warm climates. The color is nice and bright (royal blue). My stitches look very nice and even. I like DK weekend cotton better than the regular weekend which seems to heavy in the garment I made from it.

This yarn does have a tendency to split whiling knitting but not as bad as the regular weekend does.

          Comments about Berroco Weekend DK:

The color matched what I saw on my computer screen very well. The only con is having to spend the time converting hanks into balls before starting my project. The sweater I am making is turning out beautifully. I also appreciate that it is machine washable.

I used the DK to create some crazy amigurumi cats with granny square tummies. Verfy please with the result! Yarn is softer than 100% cotton, so easier on the fingers. Nice stitch definition, with enough "body" to create successful "softies". I will be using this one again!
