Cascade 220 has been changed- it has something to do with the processing, spinning etc and the company won't explain what has happened. The new style skeins have a dyelot number with 5 numbers and a alpha letter (see example below) vs the old style which had 4 numbers. Since November 2014, it almost impossible to find enough old style (the one with 4 numericals in the dyelot number) to make a sweater. Initially I found the yarn felt different - something to do with the spinning/ plying. It feels like a harder yarn in the hand. There is less loft than old Cascade and it is coarser.

12-30-14: I bought at Webs Cascade 220 (regular not superwash) #4010 (Straw) Dyelot 2K3548, which is the new style yarn - dyelot new style. I swatched it flat on #4 needle and carefully recorded the st ct: on #4 needle I got 25 sts over 4," or 6.25 st/in unblocked. I like to downgauge a little knowing that blocking makes it grow and I like a tighter fabric. I made a cardi in Cascade old style that came out at 5.8 st/in and it is perfect. I have worked up the first skein for the new project - about 4" long, so time for a gauge check.

Unblocked, now getting 25 st over 4" or 6.25 st/in. I blocked a corner of the sweater using my usual method of warm water sponged on, blotted and patted down and let dry.

IT SHRUNK!!!! The 25 st area marked off with thin scrap wool, now measures 3-3/4" which is 6.66 st/in. HOW CAN THIS BE??!!! In all my experience with wool yarn, blocking relaxes the wool and makes it expand. I've never seen it shrink. This means over 308 st the chest measurement will be 46" instead of 49."

WHAT HAVE THEY DONE TO CASCADE 220?????

I love Cascade 220. I prefer it over the 220 Superwash. It hand washes up beautifully and holds it's color well. I've just started weaving and I'm looking forward to using it on my looms. It's my favorite go to wool.

                Comments about Cascade Yarns 220:

Cascade 220 is the best workhorse yarn there is. It's a bargain when you consider you are getting 220 yards. Many companies have a line of worsted yarn, but Cascade 220 has the best range of colors, and the yarn holds up to everyday wear and tear. Best uses are for children's clothes, worsted-weight color work, and hats/scarves in school or team colors. It will felt, although I prefer yarns with a little mohair. If you don't want it to felt, there is always the 220 superwash.

                Service and delivery comments:

The colors on the website are pretty accurate. Sometimes it can be difficult to get exactly what you are looking for, but Webs customer service is very helpful. I once called and asked them to send me Cascade 220 to match the Memphis Grizzlies team colors (navy, sky blue, yellow, and white) and they did!

                  Comments about Cascade Yarns 220:

I can understand why Cascade 220 is so popular to knit with. I appreciate that the wool comes from Peru. It knits up beautifully without any snags or broken areas in the yarn. The choice of colors is excellent and the cost (especially during the anniversary sale) is fair. I am making a sweater for my adult daughter and one for myself. The yarn was sent nicely packaged and I received it soon after ordering.

                    Comments about Cascade Yarns 220:

I'm using this for afghan blocks which have a lot of cable stitches. It knits easily and looks great and since it is NOT superwash, it blocks well. For my use, I don't want too soft a yarn, either, and this gives good stitch definition. I probably wouldn't make a scarf from it because it would be a bit scratchy, but for an afghan it works very well.
