Boston Strong Hat PDF

As a Massachusetts based company we at WEBS, like so many others, were greatly saddened by the events at the Boston Marathon on April 15th, 2013. A day of sorrow and fear, but more importantly, a day of heroes. To that end we are happy to offer the Boston Strong Hat pattern from designer Lisa McFetridge, a colorwork design featuring the words “Boston Strong” and the Boston Skyline. The designer has also included some additional charts so you have options to really make this hat your own.

All proceeds from the sale of this cap pattern will go to OneFundBoston to help the victims.

This pattern is available as a PDF download.

I worked at a different gauge and adjusted for size by adding extra stars. I love the graphic and will likely find additional contexts for it (headband, cowl, etc.)

        Service and delivery comments:

I shared my hat photo with the designer, Lisa Mc Fetridge, and it turns out that our network of connections goes beyond kntting - goes to show you how good causes 'knit' people together!

My granddaughter is a Boston U. alumna, so when this pattern first became available I ordered it and the Cascade 220 in Blue Velvet and Daffodil for it. Swatching indicated that I should use size 6 needles, which I did. I am not good at fair isle knitting, so I knitted the entire hat with blue yarn except for the few rows of alternating blue and yellow ribbing. I duplicate-stitched the yellow pattern, which was the most time-consuming part. When finished and washed/blocked, the hat was huge. It fit my granddaughter's husband, though, so not a waste. I then knit a second hat, this time with Cascade 220 sport yarn and size 4 needles. Even that was very large when washed/blocked. Both the worsted and sport yarns were machine washable, which may have been the reason for the large sizes. I don't use machine washable wool yarn for myself because I hand wash all wool knits, but sad experiences have taught me that busy working mothers are not into hand washing anything. Despite my experience, I highly recommend this wonderful pattern and commend the designer for her efforts for the cause. I do recommend that machine washable wool not be used for it, however.
