Valley Yarns 514 Burning Branch Shawl

The unusual spiral shape of this shawl is generated naturally from the placement of increases. Leaf shapes grow in size by the same natural expanding process, highlighting the colors of the Leyden.

Finished Size: about 14” deep after blocking
Yarn: 1 skein Valley Yarns Leyden (75% Superwash MerinoWool/25% Nylon, 100g/437yd) color 05
Needles: US size 4 (3.50mm) needles or size needed to get gauge
Gauge: about 6 sts = 1” in stockinette stitch before blocking

Comments about Valley Yarns 514 Burning Branch Shawl:

The pattern calls for one 416-yard skein. I used a 445-yard skein of other fingering yarn from my stash, and did not have enough yarn. Had to make the scarf an inch shorter/narrower. Aside from that problem, this is a really fun scarf to knit!

Comments about Valley Yarns 514 Burning Branch Shawl:

This is really a lovely shawl when complete with a beautiful design worked into the piece by the increases. However, the yardage quoted is not sufficient to complete the shawl as written and to leave it incomplete takes away from the design. I used " Caper Sock" by String Theory which has a lovely sheen and drape. Final amount used was close to 500 yards- but certainly worth buying the second skein and completing the pattern as designed.

Comments about Valley Yarns 514 Burning Branch Shawl:

Please be advised that one skein of the recommended yarn is not enough. The pattern says one skein may not be enough due to variation in yardage per skein and that if you run out of yarn you should just bind off early, but I ran out of yarn approximately 20 rows before the end of the pattern and it really doesn't look right. Other than that, this is a pretty nice pattern.
