Comments about Great Adirondack Mulberry Silk Roving:

I pulled off 3 foot long pieces of the silk roving, separated it lengthwise into about 8 to 10 thinner sections, and spun it as I would a roving, end to end. I found it easy to spin, as long as you make the sections thin enough to start with to suit the yarn you are making. I found to make the roving thinner while spinning you need to give lots of room between your hands to pull it apart - the strands are long and strong and don't want to pull apart. It is easier to separate before it is winding on the bobbin or at all twisted.
I made one strand of silk and plied it with one strand of alpaca to form a sport weight yarn that is soft, strong and beautiful. I like that I can see the flow of colours change because I have one solid chocolate brown alpaca strand and one variegated silk strand. I used Hummingbird (greens) - it looks awesome!
I found very few slubs or faults. It does like to tangle on itself when you are separating it.
I got two hanks for my birthday, and would buy it myself as I am really enjoying spinning it.

Comments about Great Adirondack Mulberry Silk Roving:

Spun laceweight to combine with another strand of wool for knitting a baby bonnet. It is easy to spin if you spin from the fold and loosen the fibers up beforehand. Don't try to spin it from the end as in worsted spinning. Pull off lengths of about one foot and then as you strip them into thirds they will automatically loosen enough to spin well. This is all from trial and error. I think the compactedness is from the dyeing but I have dyed silk like this myself and didn't have this problem, leading to easier spinning. There are hardly any noils in this silk so the finished product is a beautiful, even shiny single and I think the price is great. Just follow the guidelines for silk spinning and it will be perfect.

Comments about Great Adirondack Mulberry Silk Roving:

This dyed silk is lustrous and very lovely. The roving is so dense, however, that the fiber needs to be opened up considerably before you'll be able to spin with it. Here and there are small snags that need to be picked out, unless you don't mind slubs in the finished yarn. Because it's not reeled silk, it won't make a perfectly smooth yarn, but it does make a pretty yarn with a little bit of texture to it. It can be spun extremely fine. Remember that when plied, the colors will blend together.
