Plymouth Yarn Baby Alpaca Ampato

Plymouth Baby Alpaca Ampato is a 100% baby alpaca yarn that twists different shades of the same color together for interest. Since it's baby alpaca, this yarn is incredibly soft, so it's perfect for projects that will be worn next to the skin. Besides garments, think cozy scarves, hats, mittens, and more!

I really like knitting with this yarn. It is three fibers twisted together: one thick and two thinner ones, and despite the difference in fiber width, the yarn knits up to a beautiful, even fabric without any knubs. It is good for casual or more professional and tailored patterns. My guages are thus: 16 stitches and 22 rows on 8's, 15 stitches and 20 rows on 9's and 17 stitches and 21 rows on 7's. The swatch I knitted on 7's had almost no give and would be suitable for a boxy, very warm garment. Both the 16/22 and 15/20 swatches were beautiful. This yarn is fuzzy, not hairy and would be also be suitable for aran patterns where the drapey effects of alpaca would be appealing. I typically buy a bag of yarn from Webs, swatch like a maniac and then knit sweater in my favorites. This made the cut with flying colors. The other yarn I liked a lot was Frog Tree Meriboo which knitted up to a perfect DK guage. I wet blocked all swatches. Ampato did expand somewhat on the wet blocking process both by rows and stitches (about one each way). It did not fuzz up, but I would recommend dry cleaning this yarn. The fibers do come apart when I used a long tail cast on, but went right back together when I knitted them up. There is not a problem with the yarn splicing during knitting unlike most yarns of this type. As you can tell, I'm pretty picky, and I like this yarn. No itch whatsover, it is like butter on your skin.

i bought this yarn to use as weft for a woven scarf. I liked the color and feel before i wove the scarf. Once it was woven i was dissapointed that it was itchy on my neck. So i bought another yarn. Hoping for a softer out come.
It took a week to receive the yarn. So i had to wait longer than expected.

Comments about Plymouth Yarn Baby Alpaca Ampato:

I knit som color work socks with this yarn for daughter who gets cold feet. While the socks did their job, they are very warn, the yarn shreds inside the sock. It might possibly felt.

The fingerless mits knit are really warm knit in a rib stitch but will stretch out of shape if washed. The scarf I knit with this stretched to double the size after washing. Have not tried to put items in the dryer to see if they will go back to size. I do love the feel and warmth of the knitted items just need to be sure it is the right project for the yarn.

Comments about Plymouth Yarn Baby Alpaca Ampato:

Made a scarf as a gift using the light blue. The yarn was amazingly soft. The color was really eye catching as well. After I gave the gift, several people complimented it and asked me to make more. I did notice some slight shedding while knitting, but not enough for me to really complain about it. I'd recommend this yarn. I'm definitely going to be buying more.

This yarn is very, very soft -- great for people who find wool (even merino) itchy next to the face or neck. The subtle shading of three plies of related shades is very attractive.

This is gorgeous yarn at an amazing price. I wish I would have purchased more. The pink is a bit dull but still very pretty and the red is a true red. I can't wait to use it.

I bought this to make a hat for a dear friend who has lost his hair to chemo - it is soft, the colorway is masculine enough to suit this man's man, and it has worked up beuatifully, with outstanding stitch definition, even before blocking.

I used this yarn for a large comfy sweater and it turned out even better than I had hoped. This yarn feels great in my hands, and has been a joy to work. The sweater is warm, and does not appear to be damaged by wear like other yarns. Some yarns get globby and gorss even after a few wears, but not this yarn. Looks like this sweater will be a keeper for many years to come.

The yarn is incredibly soft but does stretch with larger garments, so recommend only for small projects such as hats, scarves, smaller shawls which don't have too much weight or bulk.
