*This class fulfills the Crochet I Requirement for WEKP.
Crochet as we know it goes
back to the 1800’s. The popularity of this adaptable craft for handmade fashion
forward clothes and accessories, home goods, and toys has continued to grow
each season forthe last decade. This craft offers many different techniques,
stitches, and ways to put it all together. There is always something new to
learn in crochet. There are hundreds of interesting and satisfying small scale
portable projects ranging from hats to handbags to hedgehog plushies. Crochet
has a long history as a technique for trims, edgings, and embellishments,
Today, this is a valuable resource for other crafts such as knitting, weaving,
and sewing.
The simplicity of this craft is refreshing. A hook, some yarn, and a few basic
accessories are all you need to get started. When you find something in crochet
that you like, a lot of patterns are easy to internalize and make again and
again with speed and confidence. Repetitive motions and pattern repeats of
simple patterns can be very meditative. For those who enjoy something more
challenging in a hobby, complex patterns allow us to focus completely on
something apart from our daily lives. However, crochet is not relaxing or
restorative if you’re frustrated or confused most of the time! A good
foundation in the basics of crochet is the best way to get started.
In Crochet I we will learn
- The tools and materials used in crochet: hooks, yarn, and notions
- The basic stitches that all of crochet builds on
- The terminology, abbreviations and symbols used to describe crochet stitches and techniques in crochet patterns
- How to start reading and understanding patterns on your own
- 2 starting techniques and basic finishing
- 3 projects, working flat pieces, square and in the round, working in a spiral, simple edgings
For the comfort and safety of our students and teachers, students may be asked to wear a mask during in person classes and workshops, and masks are available upon request.
Format: In-Person
Materials Required:
Prior to the 2nd class please
purchase 5 hanks of Tahki Yarns Cotton Classic in 4 colors (we recommend
purchasing 2 hanks in the main color you wish to work in, and 1 hank each in
the remaining 3 colors). You may consult the instructor for guidance in Class
1. For those who do not have experience winding yarn into balls from their
hanks, we will go over it in Class 2. Students are encouraged to choose colors
that coordinate with their kitchen, as our projects are kitchen accessories.
Do NOT choose black, or very dark colors, please. These colors make it very
difficult for students to read their work while learning new stitches. You may
need crochet hooks in sizes F, G, H, and I (you may not use them at all, but if
you are a tight or loose crocheter, you may need to go up or down a size). You
may consult your instructor for guidance in Class 1.
