I knit mostly 100% wool socks, worsted-weight for personal use and wear such socks every day. This yarn is economical, durable, attractive (many color choices), holds color after many hand-washings, holds shape well after multiple washings (requires no blocking), consistent from color to color in weight/gauge, and the foundation of my sock-knitting for past several years (have used other brands/types as well.) When used in striped socks, there's no "bleed" from one color to another during/after washing as there is with some other (much more expensive) yarns.

Not so hot: Rare instances (not every ball...<1 in 10) of uneven yarn diameter (loose "fluff" more often than thin spot), or ball mended with a knot somewhere in the 200 yards. However, neither has been a problem in socks so far.

Some of the comments I read on this yarn said it was softer than Cascade 220. I have some of that, and I disagree -- I think the Cascade is a fair bit softer than this. The Ella Rae is, however, fuzzier.

I was a little concerned when I got the yarn that the texture wouldn't be nice enough, but when I showed it to my husband, who will be the ultimate recipient of the sweater, he said "I like it! It feels nice and sturdy!" Make of that what you will. It was enough to convince me to keep it, in any case.

I will say that the texture improves once it's knit up into fabric. However, I find it a bit hard on the hands to work with, which is not a problem I often have.

I'm currently using Aqua, which I got during the year-end sale, for a MKAL on Ravelry. I've gotten several compliments on the stitch definition. I'm so sorry this yarn is being closed out. I wish I had bought more.

I am in the process of knitting the Nanook sweater (see Ravelry) using this yarn and I am enjoying the feel and handling of it a lot. Looking closely at the yarn you can see multiple colors that together make up the purple (it's very subtle.)

A big "thank you" to the reviewer who mentioned making socks with this yarn. My socks knitted up quickly and are thick and beautiful and very warm.
One problem: the Seafoam color is visibly thicker than the other 5 colors I selected. For most projects this would not be a problem, but I wanted to do colorwork, and I the Seafoam yarn stands out like a sore thumb.

Comments about 4.59 Classic & Classic Heathers:

I bought this yarn for a sweater. The stitch definition and drape are great. The sweater has one large cable and a lot of seed stitch, and I love the way it pops with this yarn. I also like the color I bought, although the label says it is a "heathered" color, and I think it is more of a solid.
It is not the softest yarn I've ever used. I waited to write this review until after blocking, to see if it would soften, but it didn't really. Also, I found quite a few pieces of twig like pieces in the yarn. Not a lot, but enough that I spent time picking and cutting them out. The dye also ran a little during blocking.
Like I said before, it has a nice drape, especially after blocking, and I think it will keep me very warm this winter.

I'm making a wrap for a friend. I hope she likes the color, I told her it was teal/magenta mix, but it it dark green with some shadows of a darker reddish hue.

            Great basic go-to yarn

            By Captain Hook

            from Olympia, WA

Comments about 4.59 Classic & Classic Heathers:

It's not the softest worsted weight yarn I've ever used, but the resulting knitted fabrics handwash up much softer than the yarn feels in the hand, the color range is wonderful, and the price is hard to beat. I especially love the soft heathery colors for more traditional-looking knitting. I'm not big on garish modern colors that look dated after one year's wear!

I haven't worn Ella Rae Classic/Heathers next to the skin. We layer against wind and rain here in the coastal PNW, so a cotton base layer is always in place, including for watch caps/balaclavas. So I can't speak to how "scratchy" it feels...and anyway that varies from person to person.

I'd like to say thank you to WEBS for the review feature of the site. I learn so much from other reviewers!

For instance, the Texas knitter who showed photos of her socks made from Ella Rae Classic--I generally make crocheted socks from German sock yarn, since we like our socks thicker here in the wet and muddy PNW. I find knitted fingering/sock yarn socks too flimsy for wear inside field, hiking, or work boots. I'm going to try a pair of knitted socks with ERC/ERCH! It's a sturdier yarn and should do the job very well. Thanks, reviewer!
