Great Adirondack's Adirondack Alpaca is a soft, tweedy 100% alpaca yarn in a light worsted weight. One thick ply and one thin ply are loosely spun around each other, giving Adirondack Alpaca a nubbly texture and slight variations in thickness (always check gauge!) Great Adirondack's brilliant colorways give short color changes that will make your comfy sweater or a cozy scarf a thing of beauty!

    Comments about false Adirondack Alpaca:

I made a shawl as a gift to my mother with this yarn on size 6 needles. It came out absolutely beautiful. The colors didn't pool or stripe, they distributed very nicely. The colors were very true to the picture, though a tad more saturated. The yarn did split if I wasn't careful on the PSSO's. It is soft but does have some coarse hairs and has a thick-thin quality. I would call this a DK weight. Not one knot in the whole skein and it blocked really well. produced a light as a feather and warm shawl. I can't wait to get more so I can make something for myself.

        Comments about false Adirondack Alpaca:

Now that the sweater is done and I've been wearing it for a while, I am more enthusiastic about this yarn. As I hoped, the apparent scratchiness is not noticeable and the sweater feels very soft. It is also very warm, and light as a feather. Although I had my challenges working with the yarn, I'll probably forget all about that in a couple of months and buy the yarn again. It really is beautiful. Upgrading to 4 stars. I do agree with other reviewers about the weight of the yarn. My gauge was closer to DK than worsted.

            Comments about false Adirondack Alpaca:

I purchased two skeins to make a sweater. Unfortunately, I ended up knitting that sweater twice before I realized it just wasn't going to work with this yarn, so I then knit a third sweater with it. The yarn really doesn't like all this unraveling and re-knitting. It felts up and becomes almost impossible to work with in certain applications such as a three-needle bind off. If you get the yarn and simply knit something straightforward with it, you'll probably love it. If you get fussy with fit and overwork the yarn, it won't stand up well. The yarn wasn't as soft as I'd hoped. I used a different 100% alpaca product that was soft as a dream, and I expected this yarn to be that soft also. But this yarn consists of a combination of soft and more wiry hairs that gives it a slightly scratchy feel. It's soft-scratchy as opposed to a firm wool yarn that is scratchy-scratchy. I am just now finishing the third sweater, so I haven't worn it yet. I am hoping that this scratchiness will turn out to be minimal when actually wearing the sweater. I wouldn't discourage anyone from ordering this yarn, as I'm happy I did. The colors are beautiful, and the yarn has a nice halo. I would simply caution you to understand the limitations of the yarn before working with it.

Lovely, but more DK than worsted

            Comments about false Adirondack Alpaca:

Very soft, beautiful color. I tried it at the recommended needle size of 6 but found the fabric it knitted up to be a bit thin - had to go down to size 4. The texture is interesting, sort of crinkly. It does seem to be a bit uneven in thickness, sometimes almost sock weight thin and never quite what I'd call worsted. Nevertheless, I really like it and only gave it 4 stars because of the weight issue.

            so soft

            Comments about false Adirondack Alpaca:

This yarn is beautiful in the predominantly purple color I purchased, but it feels even better. It has short color changes, so it does not knit up overly blotchy, just with a lot of interest. To me it seems a bit thinner than worsted, and has some variation in thickness, but there are no surprise knots, and it seems quite strong. This yarn will really punch up a sweater design, but make it for yourself, because you won't want to part with it.

I designed and knit a v-neck cardigan sweater with this yarn (Antique colorway) and it is my absolute favorite sweater EVER. I used a simple rib for the cuffs, button band, and bottom edge. All the rest is stockinette, because this yarn doesn't need any cables or other fancy stitches. I get compliments on it wherever I go. I like the yarn so much, I bought enough for another sweater!
