It's another fantastic yarn from Mrs. Crosby - Steamer Trunk! Steamer Trunk is a worsted weight, 4-ply yarn in glorious hand-dyed, tonal hues. This yarn has fantastic stitch definition, and knits up beautifully into almost anything you can imagine: sweaters, hats, cowls, cabled projects or even cozy, warm blankets. Although the phrase "work horse yarn" would apply here, it doesn't express the softness and beauty of this yarn. Steamer Trunk is machine washable, too!

      Comments about 17.00 Steamer Trunk:

I did not enjoy knitting with this yarn. I had one skein to try it out. Two of the plies were broken in the three places. Since it's superwash, that is a pain to fix. The yarn was dry and lifeless with no pleasing hand. It softened a bit when soaked but it just became normal superwash yarn rather than a premium yarn. The color was way, way off from the picture. I understand that there is some variation in hand dyed yarns, but this skein looked nothing like the picture. Squid ink in the photo looks like shades of green, while my skein was a very dark gray, and about every foot or so there would be a 6-8" stretch of olive green.

In find this yarn harsh to the touch. It's possible it will bloom with washing, but right now I'm not enjoying myself at all. Just trying to knit a car seat baby blanket in a simple butterfly lace stitch. Very hard to see the pattern even on size 6 needles. Garter stitch fabric looks fine so that's the right needle size. Just not happy with it.

            Comments about 17.00 Steamer Trunk:

I bought this because I needed a nice blue for baby boys. Frenchman blue was just right. I made several baby sweaters with cables, and the stitch definition with the yarn was beautiful. It was so easy to use, with no problems with splitting or knots. It frogged and reknit beautifully. It was great that the knitted gauge did not deform by growing or shrinking with blocking, either by gentle blocking in Eucalan hand wash or by machine washing and even machine drying!! Great stuff. I also made the L'envelope pattern, and this was a dream to work with. The finished garment had just the right combination of not being too flimsy or drapey, yet not being too stiff for a fairly heavy garment. This isn't as soft as some of the super wash merinos, but holds its shape much better. It is Australian merino, and seems to be more like blue faced leicester, but much softer after washing. At first I thought it might be a bit too stiff for baby wear, or wear next to skin, but after washing in Eucalan it softened well, and it's not at all harsh or itchy. Really great yarn, both for handling while knitting and for the finished products.

            Excellent stitch definition

I bought this to make Little Cotton Rabbits, toy rabbit pattern. The yarn is great - fantastic stitch definiton and the roast chestnut colour I ordered has a beautiful light variation throughout that really add characher to the toy. I would definitely use this again.
