I am using Taiyo to make an oversized, king-size mitered squares blanket. It is working up quickly, the color changes are typical lovely Noro. Of course, there are knots in the skeins, so I have to do some clever grafting to rearrange some of the colors so that they flow. I'm 8 balls into a 20 ball or so project, and have had to graft about half of them. At least with Taiyo, grafting is very easy because of the thickness and the fiber blend. I would use Taiyo again for other home accessory type projects. I would probably not use it for any kind of garment because it is kind of heavy for a worsted (is it aran?) and I'm not sure it would make all that flattering a garment. I find this to be one of the softer Noro yarns. Even with the cotton content that it has, it still has enough stretch for me to knit comfortably with it.

I love Noro yarn and the beautiful colors.

I purchased 3 skeins for a project and every skein had hand tied knots connecting new yarn. Noro yarn is known for shading why would Noro, knowingly piece yarn with a knot, without considering the colorway shading - causing abrupt shading switches in the skein? I understand finding knots in skeins of yarn occasionally (don't like it) but every skein purchased?

Also because of the combination of fibers spin in this yarn when the yarn switches over to mostly cotton, the yarn is at it's weakest point and easily shreds.

Noro still has the most beautiful colorways available but when selecting this yarn realize it has to be treated very carefully and does not have the strength of a Noro 100% wool yarn.

Too many factory breaks

Pros

  • Good Weight
  • Knits Quickly
  • Nice Texture

Cons

  • Too many factory breaks/joins, colors missing
  • Twists Up

Best Uses

  • Sweaters

Comments about true Taiyo:

I made a poncho from a past NORO publication. Taiyo Aran was the recommended yarn. The yarn is beautiful, the colors are vibrant. However, many colors in this self-striping yarn were missing. It was frustrating that every skein, I bought 6, had a factory break/join with huge gaps in the striping pattern.

    Comments about true Taiyo:

Loved the yarn, it has a great feel and beautiful colors. I made a poncho for myself and several cowls as gifts. Unhappy it's being discountinued. Only negative was the number of breaks in yarn and trying to rematch colors.

        Comments about true Taiyo:

I knitted a simple Kimono in garter stitch. (Plymouth Encore garter stitch pattern.) The fabric is soft soft soft, with a beautiful texture, hand & drape. I am sure I will get a lot of use out of this piece. I am tempted to make one in a different colorway just because its a pleasure to wear...jeans or more tailored lines are all good.

I've been waiting for Noro to create a comfortable soft fiber, which is predominantly cotton; yay! It's finally here with the advent of Taiyo! I can't get enough of it! I've made four scarves so far, and will most likely be buying some more Taiyo shortly. The colors are beautiful, and those of us who have a hard time working with wool, can finally enjoy the beauty of Noro!
