Comments about false Supersocke 6-Ply Chilly Color:
I tend to like finer and glossier German/Italian sock yarns that also produce more finely textured self-striping patterns. I tend not to like the "EU" (Turkey) yarns much at all. But it so happened I had a ball of 6-ply Chilly in my workbag while at a three-day Irish music festival, most of whose venues were dimmer than expected. This was the only high contrast yarn I had on hand so I decided to go on autopilot and see what emerged.
A 3-mm bamboo handle aluminum hook surprised me by yielding a sock fabric with pleasing density, springiness, and softness. The women's size 7 sock worked up quickly, and with careful management of the striping (I can't stand mismatched stripes on socks or anything else), the 150-gram ball gave me three socks, not counting (add on) heels. With another ball at home, I made the fourth sock and all four heels, had enough left over to make a hat, and STILL some left! Knitters would probably do even better.
Like all OnLine Supersocke yarns I've worked with, this one washes up beautifully (we launder at 48 C); we dry socks in the air, not dryer. They feel great inside hiking sandals and garden clogs in our rainy wintry PNW weather. Cozy even when wet, drying quickly when swapped out, washing up perfectly when muddied, retaining softness and dimensionality. I expect that these pairs will as usual retain their nice colors and density through years of washings. I haven't yet tried them inside hiking/alpine boots.
My four rather than five stars owes to Chilly having more guard hairs than I personally like (I feel compelled to remove them as I go). These are soft and very long staple and don't affect the softness at all. It's just an aesthetic thing for me. Also the striping runs are too short to do much of anything else with, though I'd love to use this yarn for a vest or other garment.
