          • Snarly skeins, difficult to wind into balls

Comments about 18.99 Happy Feet 100 Splash:

I'm a fan of two-at-a-time sock knitting, and so measuring and winding a skein into two balls is a necessary evil to get through in my rush to get a new project started. I bought two colorways of this yarn, and the first skein (Blue Oreo) took ages to get wound because of the snarls in the way it was wound at the mill. At the time, I thought perhaps it was just me being too hasty getting the skein onto the swift, and went ahead with the project.
The fabric knits up beautifully! It's springy, stretchy, evenly spun, and the twist makes the yarn easy to avoid splitting.
I first noticed the color difference about a third of the way through the socks---one sock seemed definitely darker than the other. It wasn't a deal breaker, but quite noticeable. I was in a hurry to get them done in time for the birthday gift they were intended for, so at the time of this writing, they're already gone, but the finished product ended up one sock overall darker than the other.
Yesterday, I wound up the other skein (Crayon) and darned if it wasn't also a snarly mess! Took a full hour of fiddling to get it wound into two balls. And they are, once again, two different shades, one darker than the other. I've attached a photo of them.
Again, it isn't a deal breaker---this is SUCH lovely yarn to work with---but for almost $20 a skein, it would have been nice if the splashes of color were consistent throughout the skein. I certainly understand, and even like, the uniqueness of hand dyed yarn, especially in self-striping colors where the resulting fabric is meant to be fun and surprising. Here, with splashes of color, I would have preferred more predictable results in the overall project, especially in two socks.
I took off a star for these two cons, but the bottom line for me anyway is that I'd still buy it again and recommend it because of the lovely, soft, springy fabric it knits up to. Just be forewarned about the snarls and the subtle shade differences.

Comments about 18.99 Happy Feet 100 Splash:

I was worried I wouldn't have enough yardage to complete a pair of socks for my daughter, so I used a conrasting solid colour for the ribbing, heel and toes -- much to my surprise I had more than enough yarn for a pair of socks!
This yarn is absolutely dreamy to knit with -- it's soft and lofty and knits up just beautifully. I have already ordered more and will continue to use it as one of my go to sock yarns.
