I have finally decided that inexpensive "house" yarns are not a good investment. Maybe I haven't tried the right ones, but both Knit Picks and Valley yarns are loosely spun and tend to pill excessively. I think the loose spin is how they are able to sell their yarns at such a low price point. Colrain is a beautiful yarn with a lovely hand, very soft and snuggly. The tencel gives it a lovely drape. I used it for Jared Flood's Rift men's pullover. My husband loved it (and he's picky!), but after a single wear, it was so badly pilled under the arms he was afraid to wear it again.

Also, the tencel understandably has less elasticity, so the ribbing has stretched out. But this was to be expected.

    Comments about true Colrain:

Nicer "hand" than pure wool. Feels like it won't pill like wool. Strong and easy to fix mistakes since it really doesn't split.
My only (slight) dissatisfaction is that i just learned how to splice yarn to join balls, and the lack of felting of Tencel makes this hard.
    Lovely sheen.

    Comments about true Colrain:

This is a nice tencel and merino blend. As it is a 50/50 blend, the merino doesn't impart any stretch to the yarn. I have just started a pullover using this yarn, which will have good drape due to the tencel content. The only negative aspect at this point is that the yarn has a tendency to split.

        Comments about true Colrain:

I used this to knit an Aran jacket for my student granddaughter. When knitting, the stitch definition was great, and showed the Aran patterns to perfection. When I - gently - handwashed the completed garment, the color bled, and when dry, the stitch definition was less than before the washing. That said, the finished garment looks great, but since it looked better before it was washed, I would recommend dry cleaning.

The beautiful shine of this yarn was a surprise as much as the softness which comes with it hand in hand. I love this yarn: it is drapey, but not shapless, shiny but warm to touch. One of the best all year around yarn.

I purchased three skeins of this yarns in before Christmas to make a cowl as a Christmas gift. It was wonderful to work with, and reasonable in price. The cowl I made turned out so lovely that I decided to make another as a birthday gift so I ordered three more skeins at the end of December.

Took a class at a local yarn shop to make a cabled cowl but didn't like the wool blend they had chosen. Saw the reviews for Colrain and ordered some to try based on remarks about drape and not splitting. So pleased with results I ordered 6 more to make next year's holiday gifts. The cables come out beautifully, with good definition and a lovely drape. This will definitely be my "go-to" yarn for scarves and hats.
