Light and airy, Valley Yarns Southampton is a plush and super-soft blend of mohair and silk with a fabulous halo! Southampton can be worked at multiple gauges and with one to three strands, for fabrics ranging from lacy and open to more dense. Even lacy shawls are warm when made in this yarn, which comes in spectacular solid colors that seem to glow.

Great price, Colors brighter, simpler than photo'ed

Since I'm the first, I'll add some detail.

I purchased one each of 8 colors to see in person what was what. (I'll always be able to use them.)
The fiber content is close to my absolute favorite Kidsilk Haze, just a touch more silk at 28%. This is Kid Mohair, KSH is 'super' kid mohair, as is my other fav, Debbie Bliss Angel. Of the three DB Angel is still the softest and hairiest (in a good way) with a more limited color range than KSH, but very good. KSH is very soft, a little sparser with wonderfully complex colors.
Southampton feels closer to yearling/adult --let's call it young adult mohair. It is soft but not the utter delight that is Angel.
Pluses: its core seems to blend in more than KSH, which can have almost white strands in its medium to pale colors.

And if you like to add a little mohair to lightweight yarns and knit at DK even worsted or bulky gauges, or want to knit something soft & lightweight, the price is AMAZING for big projects.

Cons: Besides the somewhat less soft texture, I find most of the 8 colors in person consistently brighter, more vivid, and less complex than pictured in the listing for it.
Peony is just baby pink not pinky beige. Enchanted is a nice soft lavender shade with well-matched core. Slate blue is indeed a lovely gray blue. Dark lilac has a bright pinkish purple core I like, but it does stand out a bit as an odd also-color. Spring purple is a great color if you like cool lavenders, like Dewberry only a touch grayer. It also has an opalescent core. Silver spring is a flat, warm-toned light gray/platinum, same core color just shinier. Blue jean is medium fade indigo, core shinier/paler blue. If you go in for gradient knits, #16, 8, 7 work well in the purple family. Pewter, 19 and 18 in gray range.

All in all, this is an economical alternate for pricier kid mohair yarns and, unless you're extremely sensitive, you'll find this pretty comparable for lots of purposes/patterns, esp. Rowan knitting patterns.

Comments about VALLEY YARNS Southampton:

This is one of my all-time favorite yarns. Have knitted many sweaters with this yarn. This time just making a quick hat. WEB'S
had my first choice color in my first choice shade...very happy here! Southampton yarn is so soft. Most yarns bother my allergies, but never this yarn.

Comments about VALLEY YARNS Southampton:

This is a lovely yarn HOWEVER it sheds. You should be prepared to use special care when knitting and wearing the garment. You will spend time removing the stray fibers

Comments about VALLEY YARNS Southampton:

I'm making a simple poncho out of this yarn and it is beautiful. I made the same poncho with Rowan Kidsilk Haze and I'm finding the Southampton is easier to use.

Comments about VALLEY YARNS Southampton:

This is a nice very fine merino silk yarn to work with. Unlike other mohair yarns I have used, this one was forgiving when I had to frog. The fibers stayed on the yarn to be knit instead of ending up in the air, mouth, nose, or all over the furniture etc. It knit up beautifully on 2mm needles but I could have used 1mm needles for a tighter fabric. All in all it is a lovely yarn. Very light, soft, and warm to the touch.

Comments about VALLEY YARNS Southampton:

I'm using shades of blue, mauve and grey to knit a Color Play Scarf which calls for Rowan Kidsilk Haze. Southampton is a good substitute and is much less expensive.

Gorgeous. I love the color and it's every bit as nice as Rowan's Kid Silk Haze at a fraction of the price.

Comments about VALLEY YARNS Southampton:

Beautiful mohair/silk blend. I am using it to knit a Lily Chin pattern from Vogue, a reversible cabled shawl. It has great loft and is as light as a cloud. Takes some getting used to using but it is more than worth it.

This yarn is used in combination with a thicker yarn, and it is working out very nicely.
