This is my go-to natural sock yarn for dying. It takes dyes splendidly, wears really well, does not felt in washer, and has a lovely loft after dyed and washed. It fills out beautifully but loses some length in the process. Starts thinner than a true fingering weight but after it fills out, it's perfect. Been using it for years.

I bought this based on the popular positive reviews; what a mistake! It does pick up a little loft once dyed but it stays scratchy and fuzzy. The deepest saturation it took was still a foggy version of the intended hue. It is harsh to touch and was literally scraping through my skin as I was skeining it up. I can't sell this or products made from it - my clients wouldn't believe I'd present such a low-quality, unpleasant wool to them. Thoroughly disappointed, waste of money and now a waste of space in my studio.

Comments about Valley Yarns Franklin Natural Cones:

This yarn knits up so nice on my Circular Sock Machine. My socks turned out great. However I did have a break in the yarn about a third way into my first sock, but haven't encountered anymore. This yarn dyes up so nice and washes and drys beautifully.

Comments about Valley Yarns Franklin Natural Cones:

This has got to be the absolutely worst yarn I've ever dyed or tried to knit with. I certainly don't know where the positive reviews are coming from. I used Franklin on cones exclusively and loved it until it was replaced by this inferior, certainly substandard yarn. It's just awful. See my 'cons' cuz I certainly haven't found any 'pros' to describe it. I'd give it away if I wouldn't feel so guilty about gifting it. So probably to the garbage man with it, all 3 lb. Sad, sad waste of money.

Comments about Valley Yarns Franklin Natural Cones:

I'm a dyer and sell my hand-dyed yarn. I use Franklin as the base for one of my sock yarns. It takes dye fantastically well (acid dyes), and most of my colourways are very saturated. I've knitted socks for myself using one of my Franklin hand-dyed skeins and I like them more than the socks knit out of merino/nylon. My feet don't overeat but stay very warm. They've been through the washer (warm) and drier (hot) through 2 winters with no pilling, no shrinking, no fuzz. They still look brand new.

This yarn wears like iron, but it's not merino so don't expect it to be soft. It's great for socks, especially ones for people who normally wear out their socks quickly.

Some of my customers have used it for scarves and hats, too.

I'll keep ordering it as long as it's available.

I am really enjoying dyeing my own yarn. And this yarn gives me a very nice finished product. I specifically like that I can make up my own color ways for items that I am making as gifts. This was my 2nd order and I am sure I will be back for more!!

I bought this exclusively for yarn dyeing because the price per yard was very good. It is soft, stitches are defined well and it takes dye very well. I use food colors of various brands and the colors are saturated on this yarn.

Comments about Valley Yarns Franklin Natural Cones:

I love knitting socks and sock yarn can be expensive. By dying my own, I can be creative and thrifty. The Franklin cone yarn is pretty rough and coarse until after you wash it and dye it and wash it again with woolite. I have colored it with food coloring and the brightness of the colors is amazing. I will be trying some fast acid powder dyes next. Since I knit the socks to give away as gifts for my sponsors for the MS Bike tour, I am always looking for an affordable way of keeping the cost down. The service was amazing and I can't wait till I get my next shipment. I only wish that shipping to Canada was not so expensive.
