Valley Yarns Huntington

Valley Yarns Huntington is a beautiful solid color sock yarn. It is great for colorwork and patterns with more complex stitch work. Valley Yarns Huntington is extremely soft, machine washable and would also make fantastic baby projects. You will probably need two skeins for most sock patterns.  Made in Peru.

I really like this yarn for socks. I have used it in mosaic knitting as well a plain old stripes. I would consider it a light fingering with a medium twist. Some knitters find fault with this, calling it "splitty," but I've not been over-bothered by this quality. It makes the fabric soft and supple. I have always believed a knitter and the yarn are partners in the process rather than the knitter commanding the yarn to submit to personal whim. A softer twist may take patience for some to learn but the relationship is well worth the effort!

I think this yarn is a great value, comes in smaller hanks so I don't have to have a lot left over if I am using more than one colorway in a project, washes and dries very well, softens up after washing, provides sturdy wear, and recovers nicely from frogging and re-knitting.

I tend to knit socks with yarn of this weight at a tighter gauge -- 9 or 10 st/in -- with 2 mm short circular needles. I recommend this yarn and keep it as a basic staple in my stash.

I would really love to see an even wider color palette, even some variegated or tonal yarns in this base.

Very disappointed so far. I couldn't do the basic cable pattern I'd purchased the yarn with intentions of knitting. Then, even though I hold my yarn very loosely, a ply of the yarn broke twice before I'd turned the first heel.

I'd already wound the yarn so can't return it but won't buy more until the reviews indicate these issues have been fixed. Too bad as I've liked the other Valley yarns I've used so far.

Comments about Valley Yarns Huntington:

Like other people I found the yarn a little splitty but it is very soft and very reasonably priced. Always a trade-off. All you have to do is pay attention or slow down. Am very pleased with finished product. Not washed yet so cannot comment on that aspect.

I used this yarn to make several of the
"Baa-ble hats! This was my first attempt at color work, and I wanted a nice soft yarn that would be easily washable! I just wish there were more yellows and medium greens! I found the dark greens to "spinachy" to really work well with the other colors!

        Comments about Valley Yarns Huntington:

Be sure to check the yardage when purchasing especially for socks. I prefer to make socks using one skein with enough yardage for a pair but I fell in love with the colors you offer in Huntington I decided to buy several and use as a compliment color to other sock yarn I have. I am so happy to see how well the colors blend together.

          Comments about Valley Yarns Huntington:

My mother felt like she was being upgraded when I handed her this yarn with the advice that she make me some socks with it. "Really?" she said. The color seemed too rich. The texture too silky. I confess I'm guilty of buying my eighty-five year old mother, a sock enthusiast, sock yarns of varying quality just because I like the self-striping pattern. These yarns, once they go on to becoming socks, oftentimes suffer not only from severe pilling, but actual holes. With the Huntington, my mother made me a pretty pair of ruby socks. And now she informs me, that she doesn't ever want to 'go back.' Nice, right? The bonus? I've already tossed them into the washer and dryer, and voila, no shrinking, nor pilling, at least not so far. I have lovely ruby feet, and it's a shame I will soon be wearing boots and no longer be able to lift the leg of my pants, and say, "See?"

I tried to use it on size 1 dpns. It split constantly. I don't know if this is a function of the wool or the doublewash aspect, but I had to stop using it and go to a regular wool fingering yarn for the mittens I was knitting.
