Rutabaga Cardigan

What is Being Made

The Rutabaga is an intermediate-level knitted cardigan designed by Mel Kennelly. This garment is available in eight sizes, ranging from 36 inches to 72 inches bust measurement (91.5 cm to 183 cm), with corresponding length options from 21 inches to 25 inches (53.5 cm to 63.5 cm). The cardigan is designed with approximately 2 to 5 inches of positive ease for a comfortable, relaxed fit.

Construction Techniques

The Rutabaga cardigan employs a flat construction method, meaning the garment pieces are knitted separately and then sewn together upon completion. This approach allows for greater control over shaping and fit, particularly in the armholes and neckline areas. A notable construction technique involves working with two balls of yarn simultaneously, alternating between them every other row to prevent striping or unwanted patterning effects in the finished fabric.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The primary stitch pattern used throughout the Rutabaga is referred to as Pattern St (Pattern Stitch). The garment is worked using standard knitting techniques with careful attention to gauge consistency. Armholes are marked using waste yarn, and stitch markers are employed to track pattern repeats and construction points throughout the project.

Materials and Specifications

Yarn: Berroco Wizard, a yarn weight suitable for size 8 mm needles. The yardage requirements vary by size, ranging from 2 to 4 balls of 100-gram weight (approximately 200 to 400 grams total, depending on the finished size selected).

Needles and Notions: The pattern requires size 11 (8 mm) knitting needles for the main fabric and a 16-inch circular needle in size 10 (6 mm) for neckline finishing. Additional notions include one stitch marker, waste yarn for holding stitches and marking armhole placement, and sewing supplies for seaming the finished pieces together.

Gauge: 13 stitches and 24 rows equal 4 inches (10 cm) when measured in Pattern Stitch using the larger needles, after blocking. Achieving accurate gauge is essential for obtaining the correct finished measurements.
