Berroco Boboli Lace Yarn

Berroco Boboli Lace is a luxurious blend composed of 42% wool, 35% acrylic, and 23% rayon. Each skein weighs 3.5 ounces (100 grams). This yarn produces a gauge of 6 stitches per 1 inch and 24 stitches with 30 rows over 4 inches in stockinette stitch. Knitters should use US size 6 needles (4mm) with this yarn. Care instructions recommend hand washing and laying flat to dry to maintain the yarn's beautiful drape and luster.

Berroco Ultra Alpaca Fine Yarn

Ultra Alpaca Fine represents the newest addition to Berroco's best-selling Ultra Alpaca family. This yarn combines 50% wool, 20% alpaca, and 30% nylon, creating a shimmering blend available in popular melange heather colorways. Each skein weighs 3.5 ounces (100 grams). The finer gauge of Ultra Alpaca Fine makes it ideal for knitters who prefer working with sock and lace weight yarns. This yarn produces a gauge of 7.5 stitches per 1 inch and 30 stitches with 40 rows over 4 inches in stockinette stitch. Knitters should use US size 2 needles (3mm). Unlike Boboli Lace, Ultra Alpaca Fine is machine washable in cool water; lay flat to dry.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

The patterns in this collection feature lace knitting as a primary technique, which creates decorative openwork through strategic yarn overs and decreases. The scarf gauge example demonstrates fundamental lace construction methods. Patterns utilize stockinette stitch (knit on right-side rows, purl on wrong-side rows) as a base, combined with lace elements.

Key stitches employed include:

  • Knit 2 together (k2tog) – A right-leaning decrease that removes one stitch
  • Yarn over (yo) – Creates decorative eyelets and increases within the lace pattern
  • Purl stitches – Used on wrong-side rows to create smooth stockinette fabric

The lace patterns alternate between decrease sections and yarn-over sections to create the characteristic openwork design. Knitters are instructed to check gauge after blocking, as the final dimensions of lace knitting may shift during the finishing process.

Pattern Structure and Materials

The patterns include detailed gauge information for both yarn options, allowing knitters to choose their preferred fiber while maintaining consistent finished dimensions. Markers are used to identify pattern repeats and section boundaries. The technical editing and instruction coordination ensure accuracy, though knitters are advised to check the Berroco website for any pattern corrections.

Knitters will need appropriate needles sized for their chosen yarn (US 6/4mm for Boboli Lace or US 2/3mm for Ultra Alpaca Fine) and stitch markers to track pattern repeats. The downloadable format provides convenient access to complete instructions for all five designs.
